    Chapter IX

    ––––––––

MOLDURA JFD At Dawn, Joanna went to the room where Mr. Jordan had spent the night. Still deepasleep, on top of the huge pillows. All unkempt.

The maid knelt and tugged at his hair, making it smooth. Not resisting, he kissed her lips.

The young man threatened to awaken, as he felt the maid's lips, but his drunkenness led him to become unconscious.

Allen Jordan was at the table making his breakfast, his wife sat down to keep him company at the meal.

He was staring at the table all the time, avoiding facing his hated wife.

    -Good day sir! -She said.

-I already started with a bad day! It's the first day of an inopportune marriage! -he withdrew himself without having the rest of the coffee.

In his study, he was looking at some papers. He noticed that there was nothing important to solve.

    A servant entered the room.

-Did you send for me, sir?

    -Any appointments scheduled for today?

-An orphanage to visit and to see the works of the new grocery store.

-I can see it another day ... -He ignored his obligations.

Allen Jordan came to the main room, and saw Ebellaine, sitting in the armchair, reading a book, as soon as she saw him, rose quickly.

-I dismissed Joanna today, she was indisposed.

-I don’t care? -He pitched it.

-I'm warning you ... -He left, ignoring his wife's explanation.

At dinner there was no different, Ebellaine as she sat at the table, to share the food, he stood up without finishing his meal.

She felt bad about the situation. She tried a friendly approach and he despised her all the time.

She and her Aunt Alva locked themselves in the library to talk. Ebellaine complained to her aunt about her first week of marriage.

-Firstdays of marriage and we cannot stand each other. Very badly we address some words, he speaks to me only what is necessary. He tries to dine in my absence, when I sit down at the table, he simply stands up.

    - That is awful!

-How can I have a marriage like this one?If only I loved him, I'd take it all. But I don’t love him and he can’t stand me.

-I did not think that marriage would come to that.

-As you imagined, we would both fall in love on the first day of marriage?

-I expected him to care for you.

-He will never be affectionate, indulgent and passionate.

-You speak with such conviction that sometimes you frighten me.

    -He's a monster!

-You try to change him, a tough man when he falls in love becomes a beautiful human being.

-I do not want him to fall in love with me, I just want his friendship and respect. She blushed. -... Let's change the subject.

Alva noticed a different glow in the girl's eyes.

-What gives me hope of continuing to live and carrying this difficult marriage, is the man who kissed me ... I'm sure I'll find him one day.

    -You still dream about that?

-He is everything to me. I sleep and settle for him. I know that I am sinning by being married to one man and bearing another in mind. But I can’t go against my longings.

    MOLDURA JFD

The two were in the main room, Mr. Allen Jordan arrived at that moment.

-Good morning Mr. Allen Jordan! -Alva said.

-Good morning, Mrs. Alva! -He moved on and up the stairs.

In the afternoon, he was in his study, checking some papers, his wife came in and he glanced at her. He could not imagine that Ebellaine could enter his study without his orders.

-What do you want from here? -he was serious.

    -Can we talk?

    -About?

    -About my Aunt Alva.

He left the papers on the table, waiting for her to speak.

But she stood and decided to continue the conversation without sitting in a soft chair at her husband's table.

-I'd like you to be kinder to Aunt Alva.

-Do you want me to change my way to satisfy you?

He was furious as he stared at his wife. Then Ebellaine's face flushed. She felt threatened by that rude face in front of her.

-No! Pardon me! -She tried to explain herself. -I do not want you to do my will, but I love Auntie Alva, and she's a great person.

    -I know...

He tapped his fingers on the table, already looking impatient with the soft voice of his consort.

-You treated her badly today, and she may think you're upset with her.

-You should have explained to her that I'm like this because of this goddamn marriage.

-I thought you wanted discretion about it.

-For what? One day we will separate, there is no reason to hide what is really going on between us.

-I hope that when this separation is announced, it won’t be too late ...

-Do you have any plans for divorce yet?

-Making plans is not ideal. -She stared at him. -I planned a marriage completely opposite to that.

-I never planned to be married. -He stood up and hurried to one side, resting one hand on his own waist. - You said what you wanted ... Now get out!

    -Excuse me! -She pulled back.

Ebellaine was seated at the desk in her room, and at that moment there was a knock on the door. She lifted her head and looked toward the passage of her room.

    - Come in!

    Joanna came in.

-Excuse me, ma'am, I brought your tea.

    -Thanks.

    - Good evening, ma'am!

    -Good night, Joanna!

The young maid withdrew herself from the room, and Ebellaine closed the letter she had written to her father.

After a few minutes, she heard a strange noise.

Without imagining what it was, she left her room and began to walk down the hall. As he held the candelabrum in his hand.

Ahead she saw a clarity coming from the ballroom.

When she opened the door, she found everyone watching her. Allen Jordan was having a private party for his friends. Everyone was drunk, their clothes crumpled, and several lipstick marks were evident on their necks.

The females had few clothes, that is, they wore only sexy corsets.

Beautiful and at the same time ignoble women.

Ebellaine caught her eye in the image of her husband, sitting with two women on his lap, smoothing him and giving him soft kisses on the neck, on either side.

I thought you were asleep already. Allen Jordan said when he saw her. His voice sounded as ironic as his cold stare to his wife at the door.

At that moment everyone laughed at her. The way she was amazed at all that immorality and especially her husband's debauchery. They were not at all romantic or polite.

-If you like, you can take revenge on him ... with me. - Said a friend of the host. He was a handsome young man, his chest was softly exposed by the front opening of his shirt.

-Enjoy the opportunity! -She sneered her husband more sarcastically. - He's all yours!

Allen Jordan turned his face to the side, paying attention to the two women who were with him. They seemed more interesting than the embarrassed image of his wife.

Enraged, Ebellaine slammed the door quickly and left the scene.

    Chapter X

A few weeks later Ebellaine was visited by her father. The young woman ran to meet him, to hug him.

She missed him so much. Since her marriage, she had never seen him again, and that had also made her days bitter in that palace.

    - How have you been, Dad?

-The house without you looks like a desert.

    -How's Alfina?

    -Fine what about you?

-Well ...-she answered unhappily. Looking down at the fabric of her dress.

-Didn’t you tell me that Mr. Jordan will change the decoration of the palace?

    - Yeah ... He's waiting for the project to be ready.

    MOLDURA JFD

Over lunch Allen Jordan sat at the table to share the meal with his father-in-law and his wife. Still in silence, he began to savour his food without paying any attention to his visit and neither to his wife. The host hated the idea of having to share every day at the food table with a woman he had never wanted to be his partner.

    He thought it was punishment.

-They speak very well of your administration in the city.

His father-in-law commented. Looking genuinely amazed at the intelligence of his daughter's husband. Ebellaine would never have another husband as bright and admirable as Mr. Jordan.

-I'm trying to make things easier. -He hissed, tasting the food for the fifth time. His head was still bent.

    - Are you going to extend the nursery?

At that moment, he lifted his head and looked up at the circumspect figure of his father-in-law. Wearing dark suits.

-The mothers asked me to donate materials for retirement. So, I decided to extend it, it does not cost anything ... The shelter is crammed with abandoned children. And the rooms are small for so many people.

-Speaking of children, when will you give me a grandchild?

Allen Jordan and Ebellaine looked at each other, not knowing what to answer.

The word grandson sounded to them like a hidden insult. It was as if they could never realize it one day in their married lives.

-Daddy, it is still too early to think about it. -She looked back at her husband, to see if she had said the correct answer, but the young man ignored her. He'd rather she had her mouth twisted shut. So, he would not have to hear that annoying voice in his ears.

-The wine is wonderful! Don’t you think? -Lord Jordan said, trying to change the subject.

-Yes, it's impeccable! And I apologize for the untimely question, but I can’t wait
