Why don’t you kids have a seat, Mr. Harvey said. Frank Harvey was the editor of the Traysvile Tribune, our local newspaper in Traysville, Iowa.
Tell me about this little club that you have."
I’m Nate Parker and my friends – Lanie Talbot, Pete Bixby and Greg Hines, who we all called Gadget – and I were in the newspaper office. Mr. Harvey had called our parents and asked us to come down to speak to him.
Well sir,
I said, looking at my friends. We have a club called the Ghost Squad. We investigate haunted houses and find out if there is really a ghost or if there is a more rational explanation.
And how many of these – er – haunted houses have you investigated?
Mr. Harvey asked, picking up a pencil and chewing on the end of it thoughtfully.
Lanie Talbot looked at me and then spoke up. We’ve investigated two so far,
she said.
And you captured evidence of the paranormal?
Mr. Harvey said, raising his eyebrows.
I cleared my throat. Our most recent case was a kid from our school who thought that he had a ghost in his – well – in his closet. He heard moaning.
But it wasn’t a ghost,
Gadget said. We figured out that he had a draft coming from the attic through a crack in the ceiling. As air passed over a collection of old coke bottles he had on the top shelf it made a moaning sound.
Mr. Harvey smiled chuckled. Well, it sounds as if you children are very rational and thorough. What about your other case?
I spoke up this time. I was the President of the Junior Ghost Hunters and so I usually did the talking. Gadget was the tech manager, Lanie was the case manager and Pete was in charge of security. Our other case involved uh – someone seeing a ghost through a window, and while we were investigating, we thought that we had captured a ghost voice on tape.
It had been Gadget who had seen the ghost in a window and as a result, we had investigated a very creepy house.
Mr. Harvey looked disappointed. That’s very nice but it’s not exactly what I’m looking for.
What are you looking for exactly, sir?
I asked.
Mr. Harvey sighed. Well, I was looking for something really unique, pictures, videos or maybe an interview with a real, live ghost – unfortunately, there isn’t much newsworthy about forming a mystery club. I’m sorry, kids.
We all looked at each other sadly. If we had a story about us in the local newspaper, we would probably be able to get our next case much more easily. It had been two weeks since we solved the Case of the Moaning Closet, which is what we were calling it, and we’d had no clients at all. I leaned forward and looked at Mr. Harvey. Sir, would you be willing to run the interview if we do come up with some compelling footage of the paranormal in our next case?
I’d certainly consider it,
Mr. Harvey said. What is your next case? Can you talk about it?
Well that’s the thing,
I said, glancing at my friends. We don’t actually have another case yet. We need to get the word out so we can find one. We were hoping this interview would lead to our next case.
Understandable,
Mr. Harvey said. But I’m afraid I can’t run a story just to give your club more exposure. I would need something to make it newsworthy.
We all nodded sadly.
However,
Mr. Harvey said. "I
