Richard Neer

The Last Resort is Richard Neer's fourth novel featuring Riley King and his radio cohort Rick Stone, as they investigate crime along the eastern seaboard. Something of the Night was the initial offering in the Riley King series followed by The Master Builders, (May 2016). Indian Summer was published in the fall of that year.  Neer has worked in important roles at two of the most prestigious and groundbreaking radio stations in history, both on and off-air ---the progressive rocker WNEW-FM for almost thirty years, and the nation's first full time sports talker, WFAN over the past twenty eight.  He also co-founded WLIR, the first suburban progressive rock station in the country. Neer is in the final stages of preparing his next novel, "The Punch List", featuring the same protagonists.

I don’t believe in such things, Riley. It’s against my Christian religion. But damned if I can find another reason and Lord knows I tried. That house is haunted.

Chipper McKenna is the top grossing realtor on Hilton Head Island. Like most, he is given to hyperbole in his listing descriptions, but with me, he’s always been a straight shooter. Other than an interest in architecture, we share little in common. But whenever he needs the services of an independent investigator, I’m his first option.

I said, I think you need a priest or a psychic, not a detective. Or someone like Benjamin Radford, who’s good at debunking stuff. I don’t have any solid contacts in the paranormal world.

You’re not getting what I’m telling ya. I can’t find another reason. That’s why I want to hire you so’s you can.

Pitting me against the dark forces. Eww, that’s scary.

Chipper took a sip of top shelf bourbon and shook his head at my immature sarcasm. We were sitting outside on his screen porch, savoring the cool late October weather. Only the sycamores had begun to shed their leaves. The maples and oaks seemed weeks away from peak color. It had been such a hot and rainy summer that I wondered if their spectacular palette would still be on display at Christmas.

Chipper said, I know you’re semi-retired now but come on, how much golf can you play? I’m giving you a chance to get them old juices flowing again.
