    From the Editor

Welcome, readers, to the April issue of Spaceports & Spidersilk. Officially, Spring has sprung, though it can be hard to judge seasonal changes from here at my desk. Luckily, the stories and poems gathered here share a commonality beyond weather patterns and hayfever. These are tales of pushing boundaries, of going outside comfort zones, both in terms of location and social convention. Here you will find stories of young people who take on responsibilities their friends and families might never understand, and who form friendships and working relationships with people and creatures in whom their friends and family might never believe.

Whether the protagonists in these narratives are choosing to travel light-years from their homes, or to protect and befriend alien or supernatural beings, they are making unusual choices, thinking outside the box, and apart from the herd.

Such strange choices can lead to stranger consequences-- and those, in turn, are what can make reading magical.

    I tried to swim away

and saw that he too was retreating.
