    Prelude: The Eye Twitch

Hillsville Nebraska, is just a small town with a crime rate that is virtually non-existent. Chief John Twait yearns for excitement. However, sometimes we should be careful for what we wish. John is just four weeks away from retirement but now there is just one problem: Chief John Twait has a serial killer on his hands.

    Chapter One: Dreams of Beaches

The sun is bright in the cloudless sky above the small Nebraskan town of Hillsville on this cold January morning. John Twait, Chief and Lead Detective for the Hillsville Police Department, is waking up with two thoughts on his mind: retirement and sandy beaches.

    7:00 a.m.

    Beep, Beep, Beep…

Thirty days and no more alarm,’ I thought to myself as I reached for the off button.

Rise and shine sweetheart, I whispered into my sleeping wife’s ear. The countdown to fun and adventure has begun.

With that, I give her a gentle slap across the butt and off to the shower I go.

John, are we going to Hawaii on our first adventure or second? Sarah asks.

Sarah, John Twait’s wife of 20 years, has never been out of the small town of Hillsville, and she is eagerly awaiting the chance to travel. Sarah, too, has been counting the days until John’s departure from Hillsville’s finest as well as her own retirement as a dispatcher at the Hillsville Police Department. Hillsville, Nebraska, a quiet small town with a population of 2,000, is a law enforcement officer’s dream with the lowest crime rate in the region.

Sarah Twait is a 5’3" blond Nebraska farm girl with legs to die for who met John Twait during a traffic stop when she was in college out with the girls one night, and it was love at first sight.

The Twaits learned early in their relationship that they would be unable to have children naturally due to a medical condition, so the young couple decided that serving the small community would be their life’s passion and for twenty-five years, they have done just that.

The Twaits are about to embark on a new journey of travel and adventure, and both are excited to begin this next chapter in their lives.

Hawaii. I think we should start there, I tell Sarah as I finish putting on my blue suit that I will never wear again after this month. I watch as Sarah slowly gets dressed and remember just how blessed I am to have such a beautiful wife.

We are going to leave this town and never look back, I whisper to her as I give her a gentle hug.

I can’t wait, John. I haven’t slept all week trying to decide what to do first!

Here, take my credit card and get us reservations in Honolulu at the best hotel on the beach.

I assume we are flying first class? Sarah says to me with an ear-to-ear grin.

Yes! Of course! Only the best for you and me from now on babe. I remark as I pinch her left cheek on my way past heading to the door.

I grab my utility belt and service revolver and out the door I go. I immediately turn and come back into the house to grab my snow gear because even though the sun was out earlier, now it is snowing at a pretty good clip.

Better dress warm today, honey. The weatherman screwed up again; it’s snowing.

No more snow! I am tired of snow. Sarah says as she reaches for her car keys. I’ll see you at work sweetheart, Sarah says to me as she gives me a kiss on the cheek.

Today, I have to stop and pick up the new kid, my replacement, Mike Yeager Detective First Class.

This has got to be a dream come true for a young guy like Mike coming from the big city with its non-stop crime to this peaceful town,’ I’m thinking as I pull into the parking lot at our local motel where Mike is staying.

I spot the young detective running across the parking lot with no coat and the heavy snow sticking to his face.

You’re not in LA anymore Dorothy, I yell out of the truck window with a grin on my face.

No shit, Mike says to me as he wipes the snow from his three-day-old beard. The weather man said it would be nice and sunny, and it’s snowing like a bitch!

Get used to it, my friend. This is Nebraska, I tell him with a smile.

The young man reaches out to me, and we exchange a firm handshake.

    Mike Yeager.

John Twait. You can call me Chief.
