WINNING LETTER

AT THE time of writing this we were waiting to hear if President Cyril Ramaphosa would step down following the damning Phala Phala report. When news of his impending resignation started filtering in, there was an almost collective sigh of weariness.

I don’t think it was only in our newsroom – many South Africans pondered the possibility of political instability and who we’d be saddled with next. The leadership options aren’t exactly stellar and the rand tanked along with our mood.

But then I thought of how resilient we are. We’ve been through the most the past few years with Covid, Day Zero in Cape Town, riots in KwaZulu-Natal, loadshedding. Yet here we are, still standing.

Yes, there are losses and damages. Yes, we’re left battered. Yes, it takes a while to recover from every blow. But we do. Every day, putting one foot in front of the other.

I believe we’re among the toughest people
