Tom received a bachelor’s degree in commerce and finance from the University of Virginia in 1961 and a doctorate of naturopathy degree from The Clayton College in 1993. He received a Doctor of Divinity degree from the Compassionate Service Theological Seminary in 2007. He learned a great deal about health in recovering from polio at age 8 and a near fatal auto accident at age 16. Working in corporate America, his life changed radically at the age 38, when he was diagnosed with a terminal degenerative disease. Healing the condition naturally, Tom began a new phase of life, dedicating his life to helping others. His story was published nationally in Prevention magazine. Tom is the founder of the International Breath Institute and the Academy for Coaching Parents International. He is a dynamic workshop facilitator and inspirational speaker who has led fire walks, appeared on television and radio, taught college courses in intuitional development and presented workshops and seminars in the US and abroad for the last 30 years.

    Breathe and Grow Rich is the result of over 30 years of research and results in private practice, workshops and seminars. It is about your health, wealth and joy. It offers new ideas, approaches and techniques to enrich your life. To recognize the connection between health, wealth and joy, let’s review some definitions as they apply to the book.

    Rich—powerful, noble, productive;

    Wealthy—possessing wellbeing; happy;

    Wealth—abundance of resources;

    Joy—the feeling of connection with all of life.

    Most people say they want to be rich, and I want to make sure that is your goal—becoming a powerful, noble and productive person. Also, most people I know would like to be wealthy—possessing wellbeing and happiness. These two attributes exist as part of your greater joy and you will achieve these goals by using the Breathe and Grow Rich strategies.

    My experience of health, wealth and joy comes both from my personal health problems and working with clients for 30 years. I worked with financially successful clients who were poor of spirit and bereft of joy. They demonstrated that having money, financial freedom, was not a guarantee of a rich life of optimal health or loving relationships. I sat with dying clients and watched joy shine through their eyes at the prospects of new adventure. They demonstrated their connection with their inner spirit. My clients, at various stage of disenchantment, learned to embrace their joy and found an inner peace. They dramatically improved the way they felt about their lives and their joy.

    The Simple Truth

    True wealth is our health, and without it, nothing else matters. The moment when Mark Victor Hansen, co-author of the best-selling Chicken Soup for the Soul series, uttered that truth in a conversation we had, he was summarizing my life’s mission: to restore people’s sense of connection, or joy, to their lives.

    Remembering joy improves any situation you may face or struggle with because it provides a core resilience that you can always depend on. You will never feel alone again if you remain connected to joy, which you can remember by breathing in a certain way. Witness the results when people restore their reconnection to joy:

    Improved health;

    Increased harmony in their relationships;

    Greater mental clarity;

    Finding their purpose in living.

    Health Means Holy

    Health comes from the German, hilde, (hielida), meaning whole, wholesome, holy. The word addresses the interconnectivity of all parts: the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual aspects of human life.

    In my own quest for health, my life experiences with illness and dealing with medical systems and Medicare, I’ve utilized a little-known key to health that will make you feel better, do better and enrich your life. My credentials:

    Recovered from polio (age 8), unable to walk.

    Recovered from auto injury (age 16), compound fracture of left humerus, brain injury, paralysis from waist down on left side, lost all teeth, shattered jaw, crushed cheekbones, silver dollar sized chunk from roof of the mouth.

    Mastered weight-rebounding (age 16), from 175 to 125 to 197 in 1 year, subsequently normalizing and remaining at 175 for most of my adult life. (presently 182).

    Recovered from brain damage of left-frontal lobe from previous auto injury (age 21), would be aware of processing and not getting result; no ability to memorize—blessedly learned about mnemonics.

    Recovered from nerve damage (age 23) to sciatic and peroneal nerve paralysis from dislocated hip of previous auto injury. Told I’d wear a footbrace for the rest of my life. Threw away the brace after a year and a half; limped for a couple of years while in pain but worked/walked out of the limp though I still cannot ice skate.

    Recovered from depression (age 29) Hid in house for 6 months.

    Recovered from endocrine failure (age 38), likely from 10-15 cups of coffee/day and prescription amphetamines.

    That’s just the short version, and since those events, I’ve not had a cold or experienced any medical condition in the last 30 years. I now pass onto you what I have learned during the course of my adventures with the medical community. My hope is to spare you and your loved ones some of the inevitable pain and suffering that otherwise is waiting in your future: to relieve some of the discomforts you have with your present life and empower your richer and fuller life.

    Over the last 30 years, I have become a filter of information about life riches, health and joy. Let me pass on 30 years of chasing such knowledge. In essence, all is energy and 90 percent of disease is stress-related.

    When your mind and body are out of balance as an energetic whole, symptoms pop up. When the out-of-balance condition is corrected, the symptoms disappear—as if by magic. If they are not dealt with, there are more serious consequences. To care for your condition is the only loving thing to do.

    Health Becomes Our Personal Responsibility

    The average age of people in the United States is increasing, with those over 50 now representing the largest percentage of the population. In the younger ages, there is a 9000 percent increase in the incident of diabetes, a surge in heart disease and growing problems related to? obesity. Unless the current trends are interrupted, the medical system will continue toward eventual overload and collapse. Here is some recent data from the National Center for Health Statistics:

    In 2003 Americans made 113.9 million visits to hospital emergency rooms, a 26 percent increase over 1993;

    Hospital emergency departments decreased in number by about 12 percent during that period;

    Sixty-two percent of American adults do not perform regular exercise of 10 minutes or longer duration;

    Fifty-nine percent of Americans engage in no exercise activity at all.

    The Downhill Trend

    The US now ranks 22nd among industrialized nations in the longevity of its citizens, a figure that has been worsening the last two decades. Where are we headed in the US and the rest of the Western world with increasing pollution, decreasing nutrition and a decaying sickcare apparatus? In terms of simple logic, let’s recognize that if the traditional approach to personal health worked, we wouldn’t be in the situation in which we find ourselves with:

    Medical insurance that is out of the reach of growing numbers;

    A government that is unable to afford its expanding welfare;

    Treatments that increase costs and may compromise, rather than contribute to, our health

    What You Can Do

    The solution to the predicted sick/care crisis rests with you. Your health is in your hands in the form of self-care. Self-care is a form of love that involves your receiving and using information and instruction on optimal functioning. Lifestyle modification, such as this book suggests, offers an effective remedy for many diseases including heart disease, type II diabetes, high blood pressure, and Alzheimer’s. You need only to know what to do. So here, in this book, is what you need to know and how to put it into practice to feel better, look better and do better.

    My friends and clients convinced me to write this book after years of seeing results in private practice and seminars.
