Embracing Feardom - Darren Hodgson
Chapter 1 - Introduction
The comfort zone is an imaginary boundary that surrounds us emotionally, within it we feel safe but everything outside this boundary is accompanied to some degree by fear. This fear can be categorised into three main areas; fearlessness, stretch and paralysis.
1. Fearlessness. This is where most people hang out the majority of the time, it is a place often referred to as the comfort zone. When you get out of bed in a morning you are not paralysed by the fear that when your feet touch the floor, the floor will fall away from you and you will plummet down a 1,000 foot drop into a pit of fire to be burned alive in excruciating pain.
The act of getting out of bed in the morning is well within your comfort zone. It is something you do every day with complete confidence in your own ability to achieve it successfully, without fear of the floor collapsing beneath your feet or any other dreadful fate occuring.
2. Stretch. This is where the magic happens, it is the point where fear starts to grip you and is often referred to as the Optimal Performance Zone, in many cases the uncomfortable sensations you experience will make you more aware of what you are doing which can give you an edge that you would never experience in your comfort zone.
I like to call this area the feardom zone, it is less of a mouthful than the optimum performance zone, stepping into the feardom zone results in a person experiencing enhanced levels of concentration and focus, often accompanied by an increased anxiety level and stress response.
This is the category where you should be spending more time in if you want to change your life. Unfortunately the majority of people spend far too little time here which is why so many people lead a very unfulfilled and unhappy existence especially within western societies.
3. Paralysis. This is where your fears are so intense that you are unable to think straight and may even cause a temporary physical paralysis where the fear is so strong you find yourself unable to move until the cause of your fear has been removed.
If you spend too much time here it can have devastating consequences on your self-esteem. Self-esteem is partially built on your ability to deal with the things that you face in everyday situations. If you find yourself in the paralysis zone too often you begin to doubt your ability to deal with these situations which lowers self-esteem.
It is not all bad news, it is possible to downgrade an experience from paralysis, to stretch, to well within the comfort zone. Over time things that were once in the paralysis zone move to the feardom zone and become more achievable, the more of these hurdles you overcome the more your self-esteem increases.
What Can You Expect From This Book
Throughout this book I am going to equip you with the tools you will need to step out of your comfort zone and in doing so stretch its boundaries so what was once a fearful experience is now well within your comfort zone. This extension of boundaries is not limited to any particular fear because it permeates though out all of your life making many things that once seems impossible, possible.
I do not know what challenges you are trying to overcome by reading this book so I created the small list below that gives you an idea of what stretching your comfort zone can help you with.
Overcoming phobias
Low self esteem
Low motivation
Indecisiveness
No life enjoyment
Anxiety
Social difficulties
This book is split into 5 chapters. The one you are reading now being the first with chapters two, three and four being the nitty gritty in stretching your comfort zone and the final one is an overview of what you have learned and how you can successfully apply it.
Chapter two is all about the importance of setting goals. It is not your normal goal setting workshop stuff so please do not skip this part if you are a seasoned goal setter. In chapter three, I will give you some tools you can use to achieve the goals you have set yourself and chapter four is all about the actions you need to take to achieve the goals set in section two using the tools you will have learned in chapter three.
Up until this point you will have learned everything you need to stretch your comfort zone but if you don’t put it together correctly it can all go wrong. A bit like baking a cake, you can have all of the ingredients in front of you but if you do not follow the method of mixing them together and baking the cake correctly it will not turn out as expected which is why I have included chapter five.
The Three Zones
Throughout of this book you will hear me talk of the comfort zone in three different ways. Below you will find two diagrams, the first diagram is how a typical comfort zone looks, with the comfort zone in the middle, then the freedom zone, the zone where you stretch yourself and the paralysis zone taking up quite a large amount of the circle.
The comfort zone is where most people spend most of their lives, this is the place where you feel certain about everything, good or bad, it does not matter because you feel you will able to handle any outcome from the situation you are in.
The feardom zone is where the magic happens, this is the place where you
