About this ebook

Ex-soldier Jonathan Vera is having a tough year—his girlfriend dumped him in a particularly cruel way and, due to his own stupidity, he finds himself saddled with debt. Instead of despairing he chooses to barter his military experience for quick money and accepts what is advertised as a very dangerous job. When his new potential employers tell him that the job involves hunting vampires, he, of course, suspects that perhaps they are not quite sane. However, their check cleared, solving all of Jonathan’s financial woes in one swoop. Now Jonathan must decide whether his new employers are crazy or, much worse, telling the truth.

“Our free short stories are intended as a doorway to our more mature premium works. Their purpose is to showcase the author’s writing style and use of evocative imagery. Although these are his earlier works—he has gotten much better since—they serve as a nice introduction to his thematic concerns as well as to his belief that a story has to be believed in to be effective. Therefore, what he presents in these stories are situations and the reactions of characters within those situations.”Walter Lazo was born in Cambridge, MA, and now lives in North Carolina. As a child he discovered his love of Weird Fiction and large, epic, heroic stories, as well as German and Greek mythology, devouring the works of H.P. Lovecraft, Robert E. Howard, J.R.R. Tolkien, Stephen King, the Grimm brothers, Bram Stoker, and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.Walter grew up reading the short stories of Richard Matheson, and later discovered the works of the great science fiction writers of the 20th century; namely, Philip K. Dick, Ray Bradbury and Isaac Asimov. He enjoys writing horror and science fiction stories with an occasional martial arts story thrown in for good measure. He is currently obsessed with the short story form and hopes that it will make a comeback in popularity. As an adult he has tried to create his own mythos, writing about the Demon World and other creatures that torment men’s dreams. He is a longtime fan of Stephen King and of the works of J.R.R. Tolkien.! ! ! A T T E N T I O N ! ! !Our Forums Are Now OPEN!Join us at: http://werewolfwinter.com/forum/

My name is Jonathan Vera, and I am an idiot. I do not say this to disparage my intelligence, of which I think I hold at least an average amount, but to acknowledge the poor choices I have made in the last year. Mistakes are wonderful things, if you survive them, allowing you a glimpse of what reality truly is. Life has consequences. I have made mistakes this last year that have sunk me into nearly ten thousand dollars of debt. This would not bother me quite so much if it wasn’t for the reason behind it: I am in debt because of a girl.

I knew from the moment I met her that I did not like her. She was superficial and unaware. At this point you may be asking, Why did you go out with her and buried yourself in so much debt if you didn’t even like her? Simple, Sally Foner was beautiful, and I am an idiot.

Sally Foner had a face of such exquisite beauty as to drive ancient Greek goddesses into fits of jealousy. She also had a body capable of dragging even the good angels down from heaven. So, you see, I was helpless before her. And I will keep on telling myself this until I believe it.

Sally believed it was a privilege for you to be around her and was not shy about letting you know it. She expected you to supply a certain lifestyle for her, replete with expensive clubs, gifts, and fancy restaurants. I fell for it and because she was so beautiful, I fell for her.

One day, going through my finances, I realized that I could no longer sustain the lifestyle Sally demanded, so I sat her down and explained to her that we(notice that we)could no longer afford to continue living our lifestyle. She dumped me on the spot. That was three months ago, and I have not seen or heard from her since.

I had tried to sustain our lifestyle. I worked long hours, taking as much overtime as I could get; I maxed out all of my credit cards, and even took out loans, but I could not keep it up. I think that by this time I did love Sally, and thought that she might love me back. I had no reason to think so; it was just my fancy.

It hurt when Sally left me but not for the reasons I would have expected. To expect someone to change for your sake is illogical. I did not expect Sally to stay with me if I could not afford her lifestyle. She wanted to live her life a certain way, and I had no right to tell her how she should live. Had she left me just because she wanted to continue living her life as she saw fit, it would not have bothered me much. The total indifference with which she left me did, however, bother me. We had spent so much time together, laughed, had fun, made love…it should have meant something. Please believe me when I tell you, I knew she wasn’t going to change her life for me. I knew that! It’s just that I expected it to have meant something to her. I will remember her always. I doubt she still remembers me.

Well, fortunately for me, I couldn’t dwell on my misery for too long; there was a huge debt I had to dig myself out of. I allowed
