Charles Calhoun

About the author Charlie Calhoun has been a life long educator and a fitness enthusiast for over 50 years. His career was spent teaching Science, and Health in middle schools and high school. Now he is a professor of Health and Fitness at Westchester Community College in New York. Like most youngsters I liked playing sports of baseball, soccer, football, basketball and others. While attending Manhattan College I learned about soccer and played on the varsity, a team made up mostly of foreign students. In 1967 few Americans played soccer. I put in extra work to develop skill with both feet and to my great surprise won the team Most Valuable Player award for the 1967 season. I’m still amazed and proud of that to this day. In my twenties I learned about vitamin and mineral supplements and their value. I was eating high fiber meals and also playing lots of basketball and running during those years. I became a roadrunner in my twenties and by age 30 was competing in races as long as half marathons (13.1 miles). I ran pretty well actually winning a couple of championships and setting personal bests of: Marathon2:46 6:19 per mile Half marathon1:185:57 per mile The finish line 1983 New York City Marathon Those times still impress me today. Now much older (67), I still love to work out on a daily basis. Running is my first love but swimming and shooting baskets are great fun too. Last week I ran three strong 7+ mile runs on the hilly wooded trails in the Rockefeller Preserve in Sleepy Hollow, NY. And best of all it was fun and I felt strong the entire way. I feel so blessed to be able to do those things. I credit the ideas found in this book with enabling me to maintain my health and fitness to this point in my life. I feel very fortunate and appreciate it everyday. The picture above shows me finishing the New York City Marathon. But I don’t feel finished. Who knows, I might still be running thirty years from now. And I hope you are as well.

    About the Author

    INTRODUCTION

Of course you want to look great, feel great and enjoy great health for a long and happy life. Everyone wants those things, but are they attainable? For most of us the answer is yes, you can do all those things and it isn't that hard to do. It is also not so common. All you need is the right information, the desire to make that happen and the willingness to put in the required work to make the changes that are necessary. This book will supply some of that vital information that explains why you might want to.

Why would you say changes? I'd say changes because the typical American life style and diet is dangerous. Many young people die needlessly. It is also very easy and common to be overweight and out of shape so for many people change would be beneficial, desirable and life enhancing.

Perhaps the most obvious indicator of making the wrong lifestyle choices is being overweight. The amount a person eats is their personal business. Being overweight is perhaps the most visible of the risk factors that short- en people's lives and damage their health in a number of ways. So it deserves to be discussed and considered by each of us.

Just this morning I read (New York Post January 18, 2012) that more than 30% of American adults are obese, and that 17% of children are. That would be 78 million adults and 13 million children who are obese and stand a much higher risk of future health problems because of that. And we are talking about serious life threatening and life ending health problems. I've also read that by 2030, 50% of Americans will be obese. Now I don't believe you can predict outcomes 18 years in advance but the trend is that we are heading for trouble. Change is clearly called for in many of our life styles. Either a lot needs to change or folks will be in trouble as will our society be.

What is the problem with having a little extra weight? And why should we care about losing weight?

Both are good questions. The problem with having a little extra weight is that it is often not a little. In fact, lots of people and many Americans are overweight to the point where it impacts their health negatively. We live in a very prosperous country and food and calorie rich food is available virtually anywhere you go. Therefore unless you are mindful of the risks it is very easy to gain weight and even become overweight or obese, as many people have already proven. Today childhood obesity is a widespread problem in America.

This book will present some very simple ideas that could help you achieve a very desirable bodyweight and improve your health prospects at the same time. Our approach is educational and simple. The ideas are easy to put into practice. You can expect to look great, have lots of energy and seldom feel tired. You may find that you love the way you look and others will surely notice as well. These ideas will be yours to keep and use for the rest of your life. If you share these ideas with loved ones and even perfect strangers they will appreciate that and you may have helped improve and even save lives.

We should all care about our weight. It is very desirable to be in the normal weight range for health reasons. But only a small minority (about 24%) of Americans are. There are lots of advantages to being lean and fit. Many diseases result from simply being overweight. Or perhaps we should say that being overweight is a risk factor for numerous illnesses and life threatening diseases at that. In lab studies they find that lab animals kept on restricted diets live about twice as long as those who can eat at will. The same is true for us.
