The trail of Tears has come and gone,

Their misery and death only now in song

We forced them all to leave their land

Dividing them up was the overall plan

No one cared no one offered their hand

    For the life of Peter

Two Bears sat on a rock by the river, his favorite place. He had walked these woods many times in the past hundred years. Times were different now, the landscape had changed the values held so dear to each tribe were like smoke in the wind. Two Bears had watched Peter in his anger set fire to the trees; this young brave was forsaken by his father.

Do you think we can help him?

Two Bears turned to look at Lucy and smiled, she was such a brave and happy child. I would hope the reason we are here is for such a reason Lucy.

You have helped others in the past? Yet here you are still.

This is true little one, so it would seem my destiny is still in the making.

Lucy watched Two Bears stand he was so tall, his long hair touched the buckskins that tied his loincloth. The feathers that adorned his hair were laced with ceremonial beads many of the girls of her village would consider Two Bears very handsome. Do you think he will listen?

Only when the wind changes and those who listen release young Peter from the past, then the rain can cleanse his heart.

It’s rained many times Two Bears since Peter’s spirit came. Lucy looked expectantly at Two Bears.

    This is true Lucy.

    I don’t understand?

Two Bears took Lucy’s hand, always amazed by her beauty even as a child she had poise and strength. Lucy came to Two Bears in the meadow by the lake; she kept hiding behind trees trying to not make her presence known. He watched her talk to the animals of the forest and they listened she had the gift that many in his village would call healer or one with the earth.

The day they finally met she was attending to a deer that was shot by a group of hunters. Lucy had released the spirit of the deer then set the fury of the forest upon the hunters. They never came back; she looked up as the hunters fled to see him watching her. Lucy had stayed with him ever since. He was the whisper on the wind and she was the wind.

Lucy you know the love of family even as you lay dying, young Peter did not. He was left to die a slow and a painful death his body still lies alone in the woods.

Did the forest not welcome him?

The forest holds his body, but his spirit cries we have to help that spirit to set it free.

Does this have anything to do with those kids we see in the woods a lot?

Yes Lucy, we are going to help them help young Peter.

Do you think they will see us?

I have been watching them with others that have lost their way those that are in spirit like us.

Two Bears and Lucy left the river behind as night closed in around them. The lights of the town came into view as they passed the cemetery.

Lucy, do you remember how you died?

Yes, a bear crossed my path as I was picking blackberries.

    Do you remember the pain?

    No, should I?

I don’t think so, but when I’m close to Peter I feel his pain. I feel the emptiness that was his life.

    Does he see you?

Not yet, I have kept my presence at a distance for now.

    You never hid from me.

There was no need you were at peace and happy here among the creatures of the forest. Young Peter only sees fire and pain, I fear for anyone that has wronged that boy.

I did not hate the bear.

No Lucy you did not hate the bear, I have seen you playing with him through the years. I fear he is under your spell as am I.

Lucy smiled and started swinging Two Bears arm, she was happy. They continued their walk unaware of the Indian watching them. Dark Cloud trusted no one, he watched them walk away he had yet to reveal his presence. The forest had always been his home, he lost count of the moons rising and he knew not this forest it had been a long time since he came to this place.

The Great Spirit must be angry with him, his death was fast but the mist seemed faster. The blue coats had marched his village through winter until most were dead and dying. He was forced to this place and the bullet that pierced his heart put down his body, but here his spirit remained. To what end he did not know. The darkness was closing in as he followed Two Bears, what tribe these two were from he was unsure.

The child acted different then the children of his village, he did not know this dance she always did while walking but it seemed to please her and the tall one.

Two Bears stopped raised his fingers to his lips to silence Lucy. There was a presence here he had felt before. Two Bears scanned the area for any sign, a branch moving a bird taking flight. The air was still but there was something here. I don’t think were alone Lucy, we have to be aware of all that goes on around us.

Is it bad? Lucy looked around.

I’m not sure they don’t want us to see them.

Dark Cloud backed away this tall one had many visions even in death.

    "Maybe they’re afraid.

That may be little one I have seen you mad, that would scare the bravest and strongest soul.

Lucy laughed and started skipping again. They were at the top of the hill leading deeper into the cemetery when Lucy stopped.

Two Bears looked down at Lucy she was staring at a group of trees near a gated head stone. What do you see Lucy?

I’m not sure but I think something is on fire. Lucy pointed in the direction of the fire.

Two Bears looked in the distance and yes a tree was on fire but this fire looked different. The tree was not burning in an upward spiral as most fires would this tree was burning across the trunk of the tree and looking closer Two Bears saw the writing of the white man.

    What is it Two Bears?

Lucy have you seen this before? Two Bears was trying to read what was on the tree.

Yes at the room with many books, the tree out front had this same writing on it. It’s not our language is it?

No Lucy it’s not. I think young Peter is behind this, I always smell fire when I’m near him and I could not make out why.

They both watched as the flames on the tree died out, with just a billowing of smoke left to show anything had happened. The letters still remained on the tree. Charlie and Dusty were out riding their bikes when they noticed the smoke. The tree came into view as the last bit of flames died out. It looks like the angry boy is at it again.

    His name is Peter.

Yeah I know his name but that doesn’t make me feel any better, I can’t forget the way he was looking at me that day in the forest.

My gramps is working on finding out everything he can about Peter so we can help him, I think it’s important for Peter to be found and we give him a proper burial.

    I wish Lillie was here.

Me too, I think we better make our way home it’s getting pretty dark.

Lucy peeked out from behind Two Bears. "They’re gone Lucy you don’t have to hide behind me.

I know, it’s just I feel better behind you then in front of you.

Laughing Two Bears made his way towards town; he wanted to see what Charlie’s grandfather was up to. The sooner they helped Peter the better
