A Note to Readers
The following chapters are a result of countless hours of studying the Biblical invitations of Jesus to follow Him as well as years of experience in my personal journey of following Christ. I encourage the reader to read each of the Scriptural accounts that are alluded to in each chapter and to let God speak to you in a personal way as He has to me. Your journey will not look like mine, but the principles are very much the same. My hope and prayer for all is that wherever you are in the journey – beginning, middle, or end – that these words will encourage you to continue the ride of your life.
CHAPTER 1
Let’s Ride
"My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me"
John 10:27 (TNIV)
It was 1978, and I was about to graduate from high school and start college life. There was no internet back then and there were certainly no smart phones. However, electronics had come a long way and had joined the toy industry to produce some great games. It was that year, 1978, when Milton Bradley came out with an electronic game called Simon
. The device had four colored buttons, each producing a particular tone when it was pressed. A round in the game consisted of the lighting up of one or more buttons in a random order, after which the player must reproduce that order by pressing the buttons. With each success came a faster pattern. The game really took off and became a pop culture icon in the 1980’s.
The Simon game inspired many imitators and knockoffs such as Pocket Repeat
and Copy Cat
. We college kids could only afford the knockoffs, so Copy Cat
became the craze between classes. You could hear the definite tones and patterns ringing throughout the dorm rooms. I’m sure the game improved memory and motor skills, but one thing was bound to happen. The pattern became so complicated and so fast, you would eventually fail.
For a long time my approach to Christianity resembled that Copy Cat
game. I wasn't trying to imitate colors, sounds, and patterns. I was attempting to play Copy Jesus
. I tried to pray like Jesus, act like Jesus, and live like Jesus. My attempts would take off strong, but before long I would sputter. Early on I learned that it was very difficult to stay in the game. You get out and feel guilty for failing. You try to start over, but it's like you know at some point you are going to fail again.
One problem with Copy Jesus
was I did get out a lot. Not only that, but I somewhat learned to like getting out. If you got out you didn't have to play anymore. It was a very difficult game to play, much less win. Who could do everything like Jesus did? When I sinned and got out of the game, I decided I would spend some time sinning because I was out anyway. Then I would hear a very convicting sermon or read an inspiring book, get back in the game and try again.
Another problem with Copy Jesus
was seeing people who were extremely good at the game. They could pray like Jesus, act like Jesus, love like Jesus, forgive like Jesus, and live like Jesus. They were so consistent and I concluded I would never be able to stay in the game as long as they did. Somehow, they had learned the secret to playing the game and winning.
Still another problem was people I knew who had never played the game. They certainly weren’t Christ followers and I thought they needed to play Copy Jesus
. It seemed they had no guilt and could do whatever they wanted. Even though they were not playing, part of me was somewhat envious of them. But someone would tell me that I needed to get those people into the game, even though I was not very good at the game. Who am I to tell anybody to get in this game that almost no one seemed to win?
Maybe that’s how Christianity was presented to you. Follow the patterns - become a Christian, pray a prayer, sign a card, and join the church. Afterwards you get into this life long game of copying Jesus. You tried that for a while and not only were you not any good at it; you didn’t even want to play. There wasn’t any joy in it and the people you saw play it consistently were people you didn’t want to be like anyway. What was the point of playing?
Thankfully, I have learned that Christianity is not a game of copying
