This is a work of fiction. Totally made up. Not real. Any resemblance to real people or events is pure coincidence.

    For adult audiences only.

Liz Lopez walked out the front door of her apartment building and into the scorching blast of a summer heat wave. She liked sunny days, when she could cover her eyes with sunglasses and people-watch to her heart's content, but this was a little more heat than she liked. Well, at least it meant the guys would be out in shorts and tank tops and not much else.

She was going to be early for work, quite a bit early, but the allure of an air-conditioned coffee shop was more than she could resist. Her apartment was sweltering. Hot Coffee, her place of work, would be an oasis of coolness.

She loved her neighborhood. The sandstone buildings were almost a hundred years old, but everything was renovated, trendy, and beautiful. Hardly anything stood over two stories high. The occasional four-story building loomed like a skyscraper. Like the office building ahead of her, tall enough to throw a welcome bar of shade across the sidewalk even in the middle of the day.

There was a narrow strip of grass between the sidewalk and the street, and a man sat there, reading a magazine. Liz eyed him up shamelessly as she walked. He wore long pants, not the ideal choice in this weather, and a shirt of pale silk. Not as revealing as a tank top, but she could see the solid bulk of his pecs and the thickness of his arms. He was a fit man.

She lifted her gaze to his face. Not bad, kind of a Clark Gable thing going on, with short dark hair and a cleft chin. He glanced up as she came close, and she fought an urge to smile as his eyes ran up her legs. Then his eyes reached her face and he said, Excuse me, Miss?

She stopped, pretended to notice him for the first time, and arched an eyebrow. Yes?

Do you know what time it is?

She glanced at her watch. Half past twelve.

Thanks. When she didn’t immediately move away he added, You live around here, don't you? I think I've seen you go by before.

Her mind clicked through the possibilities. Was he chatting her up? Did she want him to? Well, he was good-looking and she had time to spare before
