This is a work of fiction. Totally made up. Not real. Any resemblance to real people or events is pure coincidence.

    For adult audiences only.

Harriet Carter wheeled her suitcase into the hotel room, parked it against the wall, and flopped back onto the bed. Another day, another Holiday Inn. She frowned at the ceiling, feeling the familiar bleakness bubbling up. She'd started taking out-of-town contracts because everything at home reminded her of Davie. But she'd spent so many nights in hotel rooms crying over him that now the sight of a coffee machine and hotel stationery made her sad.

Well, she wouldn't give in quite yet. Her new clients at HKE were expecting her bright and early in the morning. She would take a drive, find their offices, and make sure the morning held no surprises. She heaved herself to her feet and plodded to the mirror. She was dressed for travelling, in jeans and a sweatshirt. Still, she'd make sure her hair wasn't sticking up or something. You never knew when you'd bump into a client working late on a Sunday night.

Harriet stared at her reflection. She was thirty, and most days she looked younger, but the face she saw in the mirror looked downright middle-aged. Heartbreak was taking its toll on her. At least she had low-maintenance hair, straight and brown. She brushed it back from her face with her fingers. Good enough.

Her face, always a bit long, dominated by a strong jaw, looked drawn and tired today. To be honest, she looked tired most days, lately. Well, a bit of makeup would minimize the dark circles tomorrow. Heck, she might even get a good night's sleep.

    Yeah, right.

The sweatshirt was baggy, hiding her figure. She had a decent body, despite having neglected the gym for three months straight. She was tall and slender, not the biggest bust but decently toned. Tomorrow she would dress to show off what she had. It always seemed to make the contracts go better when the men had a half-unconscious desire to please her.

She gave the mirror a brave smile. Chin up, she told her reflection. Things will get better. You're better off without that douchebag, and sooner or later that fact will sink in. In the meantime, hey, enjoy being single!

The reflection returned her smile, but it looked forced, unconvincing. She knew what the evening held. A short drive, followed by a long evening alone and a mostly-sleepless night.

The smile faded. She and her reflection shared a grim stare. Chin up, Harriet murmured. Tomorrow's another day.

The morning went as Harriet expected, which was to say badly. She slept poorly, woke exhausted, wolfed down a quick slice of toast
