    Chapter One

    Sliding to the counter, Tessa offered the sour looking college student a wink. Here’s your Red Eye, brew-ti-ful! 

    The student’s lip curled. Sneering, he took the to-go cup and left without a single tip. Rude. Not that it was her best line. Early morning shifts always started sideways. Coursework kept Tessa up most nights, so the few hours she slept - if she slept at all - ended up only throwing her off more than helping. By seven, she’d be back on top. Punning and flirting her way into getting her next textbook paid. Or her rent. Probably have to put that first if Kim actually ended up moving in with her boyfriend. Odds leaned toward them breaking up again first. Either way, sour-student probably tipped in quarters, so tossing out a few of the worst puns of the day on him wouldn’t hurt. 

    As Tessa wiped down the counter, she watched the world wake up outside. The storefront was entirely windows. No matter how many chairs and plants stood in the way, it let all the best light in, and as Michelle ducked into the back for early morning inventory, Tessa sighed, watching orange and pink bleed up into the sliver of sky visible between the skyscrapers. Pay wasn’t great, and on weekdays, mornings were a chaotic rush, but Sundays - Sundays came slow and soft. A handful of hours would’ve been way better, but the elusive glimpses at a sunrise over the city that never slept wasn’t too bad either. 

    A figure waltzed past the window. A collar of a black shirt peaking over the edge of his charcoal gray peacoat. It wasn’t cold out. Not for the natives, but sometimes, tourists experienced the chill of early spring worse. Black waves tumbled down, framing a rich caramel complexion. Perfectly tailored slacks. Black shoes likely handmade just for his feet made him perfection from head to toe, and gold accents marked his wrists - a watch and cufflinks - while ornate twists of gold pinned the corners of his collar. All matched the loops of cold in his ears. Not many men pulled off hoops, but
