The court was a flutter. Drones came yearly — flying from hive to hive. They spent a few days in each one, celebrating and dancing and entertaining before they took any newly matured drones along with them to the next hive. Though most hives did not require their services — as a fertilized queen could bear for years off a single mass fertilization, times had changed, and while a hive needed drones for little else, they had become a source of entertainment beyond the regular dances. No one else in court had the time to learn such unusual and useless tasks just for the sake of amusing others. So yearly they came. Juggling and acting out plays. Except when a queen died. Then the drones who came served their true purpose.

Melissa brushed her hands down her gown. Her body shivered in anticipation beneath the stiff fabric as she watched the drones dance. Their wings fluttered — the only ones who still had wings. A holdover of evolution. Strange and beautiful — an oddity which bemused the young girls as fewer and fewer drones were born every year. A queen's first birthing post-fertilization always resulted in the most drones. This time next year, Melissa would formally introduce the drones to their upcoming boys. Their sons. The only children in a hive which they would eventually claim and take with them once the young drones matured.

Coming up beside her, Sarah nudged Melissa. It’s weird to think it, isn’t it?

Fertilized...I always thought one of my royal sisters would mature if the Queen died. I never - never really believed I was suited to be an heir, yet here I am. Queen-to-be — readying to be filled, Melissa whispered, a heat rising to her cheeks. None of my royal sisters will bloom now. No one in the whole hive will understand the feeling.

I honestly think Erlea’s relieved about that, Angela retorted.

Both their gazes scanned the ballroom, finding Erlea high in the rafters. When the prior queen died, she had shorn her long hair like she had before the prior queen interceded — demanding the young royal dress appropriately to her status. It had been long suspected that Erlea longed to be a drone. The only times she came into court willingly were their yearly visit. Otherwise, she kept to her books or wherever she went when she snuck out of the castle.

The royal sisters would still assist in ruling matters, but they would never feel the heat building within them. Never
