Dressed in her finest with her dark hair braided down her back, Rosemary bit her lip, swaying as her eyes traced the intricate gold inlays of tapestry nearest to where the pages commanded the women to wait. Already the nobles from the highest lord’s daughter to the lowest had done their duty. Each attempted to break the sleeping curse upon the crowned prince by riding him, but none had succeeded. Now, the King of Wessex called upon the skilled tradesmen’s daughters.

I still can’t believe this is happening, one woman giggled. Her breasts almost poured out of her corset - Hannah, the butcher’s daughter. We’ll have an outpouring of royal bastards with all. Her red-painted smirk indicated she had no qualms with risking a bastard in her belly.

Adrianna - a merchant’s daughter - huffed. He isn’t leaking. Rumor says each time he’s ridden, his balls grow bigger. Lady Miranda informed me that when she rode him, they were like a breeding bull’s. Big and heavy with seed. There’s no chance of children.

I wonder why Princess Isabella of Albeon hasn’t come yet. They were betrothed. Shouldn’t she have gone first? Rosemary muttered. Her hands ached to be useful. To knead bread or form pastries with her father rather than wasting her time. She would never be Prince Sebastian’s soulmate.

Hannah rolled her eyes. I heard the prince rejected the betrothal, and that’s why this mess happened. It’s a curse by the Albeon court sorcerer.

Again, Adrianna sighed and shook her head. Based on what I got out of my brother who works with our high sorcerer, it’s likely the prince did this to himself to avoid marrying Princess Isabella.

Tossing her blond locks of her shoulder, Hannah winked. I hardly care. No one may demand to see a bride’s blood after this. Now I’m free to have a tumble with whoever I want!

A few of the other girls in line laughed their agreement, but Adrianna, who stood before Rosemary and was the next to go, remained silent. Her brow furrowed pensively as she glanced toward the door where the last woman had gone. They could hear her cries and nothing else. Every so often, a knight would step out or a page, and the opened door would let the slapping of flesh sound, but as long as she strained, the prince hadn’t awoken, and the longer time passed, the more certain it became that Adrianna would have to go.

Sure enough, the door opened once more, and a knight strode out with the woman in his arms. Her skirts about her thighs was damp, but the fluid was clear. Sweat beaded at her brow, and a flush colored her cheeks as she panted, obviously aroused and yet simultaneously contented. Everyone fell silent, watching as she was carried off.

Another knight came, and Adrianna frowned, following into the room. Unlike the last woman, they did not hear cries of pleasure, but some women seemed to take longer. Minutes went by, and everyone waited. The sorcerer warned the waking should be quick, but as half an hour past, they all returned to their chattering. All except Rosemary.

Having never touched a man - or had much interest in one, she had been content to spend her days helping her father in his bakery and helping her brothers’ wives. The castle smelled of rich oils and fine cotton. Flowers and the coldness of stone. It left her aching for the tang of yeast, the fragrance of wood burning in a stove, and the hot warm scent of freshly baked bread.

Hannah bumped her shoulder into Rosemary’s. Hey - it won’t be bad. It’s not like he’s going to be judging you. Think of it like a practice run for your wedding night.

Forcing a small smile, Rosemary nodded, but her heart raced anew when the door opened once more. Adrianna limped out. A knight held her about the waist. "You’ll
