There were several things I liked about the story and world building but Scarlet was so damn annoying I just couldn’t finish! DNF at 61%!!!! She literally slaps a guy multiple times because he won’t tell her a name of a lady that shows up in her dreams!?! Like knowing the name is so important!?! One of the most unlikable heroines I’ve ever read and all the men in the story are so in love with her….it makes no sense!?!

The main character acts like a spoiled brat. She was so frustrating. Maybe the fact that she is only 19, however with her life such as it is, she shouldn't be so stupid when it comes to the villain's and what they tell her. The narrator was egh.

i can't tell if it was the narration that started making Scarlett (main character) insufferable or the writing. this novel has the potential to be a very good story, and while i enjoyed it somewhat, the lack of continuity between Scarlett's "sides" had me frustrated- either she's 'death's maiden' and able to defend herself/strike fear into the hearts of all OR SHE'S NOT. the writing would imply that she is this 'death maiden' but then other parts of the book would tell a very different story, painting her as if she's almost helpless? idk, hoping for more from the sequel but overall, this book left something to be desired.

I need to stop taking recommendations from TikTok. It was absolutely horrible. The story and the world building was so poorly written that I don’t even want to know why there are 4 more books.

All the men rhyme with Cassian and it was really rough to keep up with who was who. And I HATE the troupe where the escape plan stops because info is dropped or emotions are too high and the woman freaks out and forgets every bit of training she has because women are so emotional. Ugh. And it happens at every high action moment in the book. Every. Freakin. Time.

Sjm fanfic? If you're choosing this- maybe only read it.
Look, the overtly obvious copying of SJM's series aside. The book was semi interesting, if not
boring and repetitive. The biggest issue was the narration. I'm sorry, but I think the narrators tone and infliction were WAY off. She over emphased inappropriate parts, under emphasis on important parts. She would soften her voice TOO much so the MC just came off weak and whiny. Most of the book our "bad ass, scariest of all scaries" sounds like she's going to start crying. It was a mess.

If Throne of Glass and From Blood and Ash had a baby…. This is better than that.

I’m so obsessed with this series. I’ve read Acotar, FBAA and many other popular series and this one is better by a land slide!!

2.5 stars. Not it for me. Emotionally immature teenage super assassin heroine. A bunch of reveals that weren’t reveals. And a hybrid of Throne of Glass and ACOTAR.

Fantasy Authors: PLEASE write an intelligent, emotionally and otherwise, heroine. It can’t be that hard. Stop making them all be constantly angry, hysterical, unthinking teenage girls. I can’t suspend the disbelief long enough to think that this kind of heroine has the capacity to be an assassin or a queen.

Excellent book, phenomenal voice actor. Dark fantasy romance, with magic, creatures, political warfare, found family, fate, love. All the things you are looking for

Wow! This was fantastic and I’m shocked that there’s no hype around this series. It’s exactly what a fantasy romance book should be. Complex characters and lots of politics. Loved this!!

Please don't be fooled, I wasted my morning on this book. I am shocked and find it highly suspect that this title has so many positive reviews. The MFC is dreadful, the set up is confusing and the rest just gets worse from there. It's just not a quality book. I think with a lot of work and some situational reality for the characters it could be interesting, but as long as it is stubbing-your-toe painful to get through a chapter there isn't much here.
As for the performance... it was very poorly recorded and the different voices aren't different unless they're odd to the point of discomfort. Like how a friend tries to do a foreign accent but really can't and you don't have the heart to tell them just how bad it is... that. It's that.

I'm sad I couldn't get into this. It looks like some people loved it. It felt messy to me, feelings didn't feel serious or real, and it overall felt a bit like an SJM fan-fic. If you love the book, that's amazing, and I'm so happy for you, but personally I don't think I will be continuing the series.

Ok... so, I listen to A LOT of audio books, but I rarely leave a review... I'm compelled to write this as I try to decide if I will continue with the series.

Here are a few of my opinions that have me questioning whether to go on or not:
    1. I absolutely do not like the protagonist in the story, Scarlet. She is obnoxious, immature, annoying, self-righteous, and just over all... obnoxious... Even after we are given the reasons why she behaves like she does, I still find it hard to empathize with her, and I am an empath by nature.
    2. The story is sooooo in-your-face predictable. The plot twists were not twists at all. There was not a single "revelation" that surprised me or that I hadn't already figured out chapters ahead of the "big reveal."
    3. There is a lack of supporting character development. Albeit, I may have this opinion solely based on my strong dislike of the main character. But maybe if I continue to read, other characters will become more intimate in the development.

I think I'll give the next book a shot, but if it is the same predictable plotting and Scarlet stays the same belligerent character, I fear I will not make it through the book, let alone the series... which will be the first time I've not finished all the books offered in a series.

I'll let you know how book 2 worked out for me by promising I'll post a review for book 2 when the outcome is present.

It's rare for a main character to infuriate me so much these days, but girlypop did it

It’s a nice story Scarlet’s tantrums can be a bit draining. I wonder if Scarlet was older would she still be that dramatic or would she be wise enough to know that not all that glitters is gold.
