- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5I want to like the book but I can't with her sing song voice
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Wow. What a beautiful book! I don't know why it has so many bad rewies because is really good. I really liked it.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5I'll start by saying that Look Behind You does first person present tense in the right way. The writing was smooth and the story was fast paced, which is perfect for this particular style.
Look Behind You, other than that it never really comes together. The story could have been an interesting one, except the readers are hit over the head about what is happening right from the get go. Once Chloe, the main character, leaves her prison and talks to someone other than herself, you already know what is going to happen. I'm not even exaggerating.
As I continued on with the story, I kept asking myself, “It can’t be this obvious, is it? Maybe it’s going to pull a Gone Girl?” Unfortunately, it was that obvious and thus it was that predictable. This left me frustrated and incredibly disappointed, because the writing is good.
The author does try to bring in more suspects, but they never produce as much weight as the first one. This wouldn’t necessarily be a bad thing. I’ve read stories before where the ‘bad guy’ is in plain sight and the story ended up being great. The problem with how it’s handled here, is that the ‘bad guy’ is so over the top, so in your face, so unredeemable, that it took me out of the story.
I know that we're meant to question whether or not Chloe is going crazy and if all of this is in her imagination, but that too isn't done well. I might have felt like she was going insane, due to her not taking her pills, if the 'bad guy' wasn't present as the bad guy. I do like unreliable narrators, but the first suspect is clearly the villain so you can't ever really question Chloe's sanity. She's sane and he's the bad guy. It is what it is.
Overall: If I had to describe this novel, I'd say that it's a mixture or the movie Gone, with Amanda Seyfried, and the novel How to be a Good Wife, only the execution isn't that good and there's no real mystery surrounding who did it. The writing is good and Hodge kept me reading, but the execution and the characters just fell flat. A novel billed as a mystery-thriller needs to have those things in order for it to be good and unfortunately, this didn’t. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I listened to the audio version of Look Behind You by Sibel Hodge.

I had never read anything by this author before, but the description of the audio book sounded interesting. And boy, was it! Chloe wakes up in an underground space with her wrists bound. She remembers who she is, but not how she got there. Fearing she has been left for dead, she finds a way to severe her bounds and then escape. She runs through a forested area until she finds a road and is rescued by a passing motorist. When she wakes up in hospital (yes, it’s a British book), she discovers she can’t remember the last 7 weeks!
Loving husband Liam does his best to convince everyone that she is having another psychotic episode, but Chloe doesn’t believe him even if the doctors and police do. So she sets out on a journey to prove first to herself and then others that she is not losing her mind. There are clues every where: clues that she had found once before. She starts a journal detailing everything she finds. Will she recover her memory? Was it Liam who attacked her or some faceless, unknown stranger? Will the police believe before it’s too late?
Susan Duerden did a fantastic job as the narrator! I was listening to it at night. The author’s words were scary enough, but with Susan Duerden adding inflection I felt like I should get up and check all of the locks on my doors and windows!
This was a fantastic story and I recommend it to anyone who likes sit-on-the-edge-of-your-seat mysteries! I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I find it hard to believe that this writer is British. The language used is American English. I found the narration extremely annoying, with every sentence uttered in the same downward tone. I won't be listening to any more books narrated by Henrietta Meire. I've read a few of Sibel Hodge's books now, and so far I've found all of Sibel Hodge's main characters a bit wet, which is tiring. However, the books are well paced and quite exciting.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5This book had quite a good story line but tended to ramble a bit in places, didn’t really have me in the ‘edge of my seat’. Enjoyable nonetheless
- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5Gave up on.
