About this audiobook
From the New York Times bestselling author of The Children on the Hill, a psychological thriller “that delivers both chilling scares and genuine emotion” (Chandler Baker, New York Times bestselling author) about a woman who, after taking in her dying, alcoholic mother, begins to suspect demonic possession is haunting her family.
Alison has never been a fan of Christmas. But with it right around the corner and her husband busily decorating their cozy Vermont home, she has no choice but to face it. Then she gets the call.
Mavis, Alison’s estranged mother, has been diagnosed with cancer and has only weeks to live. She wants to spend her remaining days with her daughter’s family. But Alison grew up with her mother’s alcoholism and violent abuse and is reluctant to unearth these traumatic memories. Still, she eventually agrees to take in Mavis, hoping that she and her mother can finally heal and have the relationship she’s always dreamed of.
But when mysterious and otherworldly things start happening upon Mavis’s arrival, Alison begins to suspect her mother is not quite who she seems. And as the holiday festivities turn into a nightmare, she must confront just how far she is willing to go to protect her family in this “twisty, propulsive, character-drive, and hair-raisingly scary” (Nick Cutter, author of The Troop) novel.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5A fantastic book! So often in modern horror, the author or filmmaker states the conclusion for you; the monster was trauma all along. But this story harkens me back to a time when it wasn't so linear and black and white. The monster can be trauma, as well as an actual monster. The true meaning of the art is up to interpretation as opposed to being distinctly one answer.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Wow! Such a great book! The twists and turns were awesome and the ending very original
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5Loved The Drowning Kind and The Night Sister plus others from this author. This book was not for me. Too dark, too much about pagan rituals, solstice etc. etc..
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5The idea of how a Mother-Daughter relationship can make one go crazy is one of the most genius "Thriller" plots I've come across. But then add in a spooky Supernatural element with memories resurfacing and a childhood home scavenger hunt? Flawless, Darling. FLAWLESS.
Not only did the twists blow my mind all the way throughout, but my perception of the characters did as well! Still, the storyline remains believable - despite the unusual circumstances. I felt genuine emotion ranging from one side of the spectrum to the other! Happy, Sad, Concern, Fear, Excitement... you'll feel all of it! - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Excellent book. An ending that I was absolutely not expecting
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Gave me Hereditary vibes. I really enjoyed this book. Also has a winter holiday angle, so it's perfect for December.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Couldn’t stop listening. The attention to detail within the characters and dialogue is fantastic ?
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I love narrator’s in this book. It’s a good spooky story. Well written. I put it on yo fall asleep but it kept me awake because I wanted to know what happened next.
