About this audiobook
A courageous doctor and his apprentice fight to save London’s poor—and discover that the hearts of men can be colder than a winter chill—in this gripping holiday mystery from New York Times bestselling author Anne Perry.
Scuff has come a long way from his time as a penniless orphan scraping together a living on the banks of the Thames. Now he’s studying medicine at a free clinic run by Dr. Crowe, a thoughtful if stoic mentor. But lately Crowe has been distracted, having witnessed an altercation between a wealthy former patient of his
named Ellie—a woman he not only treated but developed unacknowledged feelings for—and her controlling fiancé. It seems that someone is forcing Ellie to marry the man. When Crowe’s emotions come flooding back, he sets out to uncover the troubling connections between Ellie, her father, and her betrothed.
With Crowe engrossed in his investigation just weeks before the holidays, Scuff is left to run the clinic on his own, treating London’s poor and vulnerable. In the holiday spirit, he offers Mattie, a young girl in need, a warm place to stay as the winter chill sweeps through the
city. Together, Scuff and Mattie must also fend off the police, who are growing suspicious of Crowe’s amateur sleuthing. Will Crowe be able to help Ellie, and will Scuff be able to ensure that he and Mattie—and all of their patients—have a safe and peaceful Christmas?

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Having read many of Anne Perrys Christmas Novellas I often wonder why they are inhabited by such dislikable people? Well, not all of them - there are actually some pretty wonderful people in this Novella. Perry gets her characters so perfectly that with a few sentences we know who to trust and admire and who are the villains. “Christmas was in the air, with bright decorations in the windows … but what was Christmas without a family?” Before the last page is turned Perry had given me a frank and demanding definition of what constitutes a family, of truly belonging. On reflection I liked this book so much more than I originally thought.Thank you Ballantine Books and NetGalley for a copy.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5There's nothing like an Anne Perry Christmas novella to start getting in the holiday spirit. This one is the 20th installment in her Christmas novella series. I've read all of them, either before or right after each comes out, and this one is yet another outstanding installment. Each book is a standalone but typically includes a recurring character, at times, from one of the author's other series and that is certainly true in this one and so fans of her other series may well enjoy this one. In this one, William Monk and his wife, Hester, are either talked about or involved.Wonderful, feel good kind of book. Once again, I thoroughly enjoyed Anne Perry's annual Christmas novella.(I received a copy of this book from the publisher, via Net Galley, in exchange for a fair and honest review.)
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Anne Perry writes exciting mysteries centering on Christmas. This novella features Dr. Crowe, Scuff, and Monk. Dr. Crowe runs a medical service for the poor, and Scuff helps and follows instructions in an attempt to learn doctoring. Enter Eliza Hollester, the daughter of a prominent and rich man. Eliza’s carriage falls victim to a terrible accident and Eliza severely hurts herself. Dr. Crowe mends the tattered leg and falls deeply in love with Eliza. Eliza has been promised in marriage to the son of another wealthy man. Crowe witnesses Paul Dolan hitting Eliza and sets out to find why Eliza will marry such a louse. The result shows two prominent men cheating to remain in wealth and power.
