About this audiobook

The pathos of Beautiful Ruins meets the hilarity of Crazy Rich Asians in this comedic and tender novel. Their meeting in a parking lot outside a high school football game was both completely forgettable and utterly life-changing. Because no matter how you look at it, it is piss-poor luck to meet the love of your life before your life has even started. Fierce and ambitious, Alison is determined to shed her midwestern roots and emerge an actress. Kyle, all heart and spiritual yearning, believes medicine can heal the world. What could these mismatched souls have to do with each other? Everything and nothing. Even as their fates rocket them forward and apart, neither can fully let go of the past. When Alison gets her lucky break in New York City, she ends up on the fast track to stardom and a world far more different from Cincinnati than she could have ever imagined. Back home in Ohio, Kyle has a shotgun wedding and starts a pediatric practice in suburban hell. While Kyle's dreams begin to molder, Alison learns that the spotlight is always circled by shadows. As their lives inevitably intersect, Alison and Kyle must face each other in the revealing light of their decisions. I'm Glad About You is a glittering study of how far the compromises two people make will take them from the lives they were meant to live.

An unconventional love story (of sorts) about a strict Catholic man (Kyle) and his love interest (Alison) as it changes over the decades. They start out in Cincinnati, Ohio (which was fun for me as I live nearby in Kettering) but eventually Alison becomes an actress and moves to New York City. Kyle eventually marries and settles down and as Alison's acting career blossoms and she has relationships with several men. Always in the background is the shadow of their initial attraction. I was engaged with the characters which many times I am not. Well written contemporary novel.

I'm not too glad about this book. The two main characters, Alice the actress and Kyle the neurotic, big-Catholic-guilt pediatrician, are not particularly riveting in their careers or in their First World problems. Their families, Alice's seven siblings and parents, and Kyle's high maintenance wife Van, are a bit more meaty. Then there are the side dish people, Dennis the alcoholic and Seth the self-loathing gossip reporter, who don't ever seem to find their places. It just wasn't worth the time.

A couple meets in high school and fall hard for each other. They seem to be destined, for a perfect union, but after a messy break-up, they go their separate ways.Alison flees to New York, to become an actress and Kyle goes off to college, to become a doctor. Their earlier romance, haunts them, as they make their way through new careers.I would usually steer clear of a novel like this, just not my cup of tea, but I did end up enjoying it. Rebeck is a solid writer and a good story-teller. She also gives us, a nice, insider look into the TV and movie biz.
