My husband and I really enjoyed every single activity. We already had a great relationship, but we communicate even better now. We began using the book this morning and like it so far. We got two so that we each had our own book to take notes and answer questions. We have been together for many years and are using the books in preparation for marriage!
This workbook assumes a motivated couple, wanting to do the work of relationship enhancement. I think the book would also be a valuable adjunct to couples in formal counseling or in a class for couples with a leader to facilitate the writing and sharing experiences and to debrief the exercises, though this is not a necessity by any means.
The objectives for the couple’s work is mapped out in the introduction and clearly spells out the territory a couple will explore. A strength is the focus on the self and family of origin as an intro to working on the relationship. Often marital issues focus on the “other” as the problem, seldom the part “self” plays. Understanding one another’s background and contribution to marital difficulties and misunderstanding is an important foundation to helping a relationship improve. The section on Myths about marriage offers nice practical help in the form of exercises exposing and dealing with those myths.
