Description
How do you make marriage work after quitting drinking?
Most marriages have some common patterns and habits that can make or break the relationship. Problematic patterns can be exacerbated when you’re in the drinking cycle and new habits can be helpful once you stop drinking and your relationship is adjusting to a new normal.
Because we use alcohol as a coping mechanism, a way to suppress negative emotions, and a tool to connect with the people around us, there is a learning curve to making marriage work after quitting drinking.
Even if you have a strong and happy relationship it’s common to feel defensive, resentful, misunderstood, unappreciated, isolated, secretive or lonely when you’re struggling to moderate your drinking.
And once you’ve stopped drinking it’s normal to go through a phase where you wonder if you and your spouse know how to communicate or have anything in common.
