Description
February is Black History Month, and while we do study and celebrate the diversity and contributions of Black/African/African Americans during this time, these conversations and lessons are not limited to the month of February - they take place throughout the entire year. “African American history is American history, and when kids understand the fuller picture of history, it will also help them understand the fuller picture of today.” When our students’ diversity is appreciated and visible, they all thrive from learning about one another. Black History Month celebrates the rich cultural heritage, triumphs, and adversities that help shape our country’s past and present.
Our Featured Students are from Arica Mathers’ Introduction to Culinary Arts class at Century High School. During a recent class, they made taco rings in their commercial-grade kitchen. Culinary Arts & Hospitality is one of the pathways within the Business & Management career learning area, and is offered at both Century and Liberty High Schools. Students are highly engaged and learn practical skills in courses like Culinary Arts and other career-related programs of study, available at all of our high schools. One student remarked that prior to taking this class she really didn’t know her way around the kitchen, but now she feels confident cooking for her family. Current high school students as well as incoming freshmen will have the opportunity to forecast for 2023-24 courses in February and March. Look for more information from your child’s school in the coming weeks.
