Description
EAUXMAHA, BABY!!!!
LSU baseball sweeps the Kentucky Wildcats in the Baton Rouge Super Regional and will advance to the men's College World Series for the 19th time in program history, the most of any team in the Southeastern Conference. Tigers ace Paul Skenes got the action started on Saturday night with yet another elite performance on the mound going just over seven innings, giving up zero runs, and striking out nine Wildcats. The LSU offense was as advertised that night with two home run performances from both Tre Morgan and Tommy White with Hunter Dugas and Josh Pearson bringing in solos of their own. The Tigers continued to prove that they could get production from anyone in their lineup, not just the marquis sluggers.
"It's a deep lineup. It's really long," Kentucky Wildcats skipper Nick Mignione said after the loss to LSU. "There's a lot of talk about Dylan Crews and Tommy White and many others but it's long. You get past them and you can't take a break, you can't take a breath."
But it wasn't just offense that propelled Jay Johnson's squad to Omaha – the one thorn in LSU's side all season actually ended up winning them the game on Sunday: pitching. For weeks throughout the season LSU was trying to find that go-to, dependable guy outside of Paul Skenes in the pitching rotation and it is starting to come into form, both with starters and relievers. Ty Floyd got the start on Sunday and after just over three innings and three runs given up, Riley Cooper and Gavin Guidry come in for a combined five innings and did not give up a single run. LSU led nearly the entire game, but not comfortably, and it was the pitching that held on to LSU's lead.
LSU will play the winner of the Hattiesburg Super Regional in the first round in Omaha. Tennessee and Southern Miss are scheduled to play the third and final game of their super on Monday evening, a delayed start due to storms in the area.
