He holds a PhD in Nutrition Science and is a Professor of Medicine at Stanford. Most recently his research interests have expanded to include studying the effects of diet on the gut microbiome and immune function. He published a landmark study on this topic in 2021 in the journal Cell with microbiologist colleagues Drs. Justin and Erica Sonnenburg from Stanford.
