Description
Understand why core strength is important for all horse riding and why in particular it should be a focus when you start.
This episode we talk all about the core strength required for horse riding, particularly dressage.
The way you carry your body throughout your day ultimately determines how you ride.
Even if you start your ride with great posture, your body will seek the position it’s used to especially once fatigue sets in. If you find yourself sitting at a desk most days hunched over a keyboard or regularly driving a car slumped in the seat, your posture on your horse is likely to reflect this.
Establishing good spinal alignment during your everyday activities helps to foster the muscle memory and strength you require to maintain a beautifully balanced posture in the saddle. Notice how you stand, how you sit and how you carry out your daily chores.
To improve your posture on and off the horse, one of the most important places to begin is with is your core.
Your core is the entire central unit of your body and includes the muscles in the front, back and side. This is the area that we’re wanting to strengthen in order to maintain good posture for riding.
There are a variety of different muscles as part of your central core. Working these muscles together and in balance within your neutral spine is key to strengthen your core. A strong core will help you maintain a neutral spine while the horse is moving underneath us.
