REGRET
image-placeholderSpike looked down at the Sprite. The stone dropped from his hand. It landed with a thud that sounded louder in his large ears. He felt tears coming but stopped them. He couldn’t cry in front of the other goblins.
Why had he hit her? She had a black and blue mark on her head with a little blood. A wound he had caused.
Good hit,
Gor said.
His smile was huge and wicked. The other goblins around him were laughing.
Spike didn’t like that noise. It was a horrible sound. He felt bad. Really bad.
But what choice did he have? Gor or the other goblins would have really hurt the sprite. The Witch had told them to bring the stone but they couldn’t. They could bring the sprite.
Spike’s head hurt. The magic the witch had used on him had pointed him to the Sprite. It had told him that the magic of the Green Stone was in the Sprite. But it was a little different. Part of it felt like the Hedge Witch’s magic. She was a Pixie and that magic was different from the Sprites magic. Two different flavors.
In the Sprite he had struck, the magic was mixed. It had both flavors. He rubbed at his head, trying to get rid of the pain.
Search her,
Gor ordered one of the other goblins. Find the Stone.
Spike stopped rubbing his head. He couldn’t let the goblin do that. They wouldn’t be nice to the Sprite. They wouldn’t care about hurting her.
I’ll do it,
he said, jumping forward.
No,
Gor snapped. Let him.
He pointed at a tall goblin covered in scars with long fingernails. That one had a cruel looking smile as he walked forward.
Witch made me seek the stone,
Spike said, pointing at himself. I’ll search.
Gor’s eyes widened in surprise. Spike was surprised too. He’d never stood up to another goblin like that. The entire trip, he’d let Gor bully him. He’d done exactly what the older and larger goblin wanted. Even back in the witch’s caves and goblin swamp, Spike had done what the others wanted. They’d yell and push him and Spike would do what he was told.
A coward.
Spike was a coward. But he’d just stood up to Gor.
Gor was one of the most vicious goblins. Strong and evil.
His eyes narrowed, looking angry, as he stalked toward Spike. His hands were in fists, ready to punch the smaller goblin. The others moved closer and started to laugh. They were looking forward to the beating Spike was about to get.
Normally Spike would roll into a ball on the ground, covering his head with his hands. He’d cry as the punches and kicks struck him. But not this time.
Spike stood as tall as he could, staring at Gor. The larger goblin stopped, confused.
Witch give me the spell,
Spike said, pointing at himself again. Only I can find the Stone.
Gor looked down at the Sprite then back at Spike.
Find the stone,
he growled.
Spike quickly moved to the Sprite. He crouched down, searching her body. He rolled her over, looking for the stone. It should have been easy to find. The Witch had said it would be big. Big enough that the Sprite would have to carry it.
Except it had exploded back in the Sprite’s city. The stone was now small. Lots of small pieces. The Sprite would need a bag to carry them all. To Spike, he could feel the stone on her. All the pieces were there. But she had no bag.
Where was the Sprite keeping the stone? Spike stood up, stepping away from the Sprite.
Where is stone,
Gor growled.
Spike didn’t know how to respond. The Sprite didn’t have the stone on her but he could feel it on her. She had the stone’s magic with her.
Where is stone,
Gor asked again.
Spike felt a hand striking the back of his head. He stumbled forward. Turning back, rubbing at his head, he saw Gor glaring at him. Spike lowered himself a
