POND
image-placeholderThe sun shone down through the trees, lighting up the small pond of water so far below. The crystal clear water seemed to glow, small fish visible as they swam near the bottom. Green moss covered the banks, fallen leaves across the forest floor.
Hazel felt the rough bark of the tree against her back.
The branch was long and thin, starting thick at the tree and thinning as it stretched out into the forest. Green and red leaves and smaller branches sprouted off the sides. She looked up, the next branch out of her reach, the top of the incredibly tall tree not visible. Hazel could barely see the open spot where the leaves of the trees did not reach, the source of the sunlight.
The trees were so large. No Sprite had ever climbed to the tops of them.
Hazel wanted to be the first.
Someday. Not this day. She had other things she was looking forward to doing.
Taking a deep breath, Hazel pushed off the tree. She ran along the branch, bare feet stepping hard. She could feel the smoother bark of the tree, glad it was wide this close to the tree. Hazel laughed as the wind brushed against her.
The end of the branch came quickly, the wood under her feet getting thinner as she neared the end. It could no longer support her weight, bending under each step.
She could see the tip of the branch, only a couple lengths away. Her timing had to be perfect.
The branch barely fit under her feet. Hazel ran with one foot in front of the other. She wanted to look down, to see the pool very far below her, but she couldn’t. She had to concentrate on making sure her feet stayed on the branch.
It got thinner than her feet. The end was so close, only the length of her body away.
Without stopping Hazel hopped up into the air. She landed on the end of the branch, the wood bending under her weight. Through her bare feet she could feel the tension as the branch wanted to snap back up.
She let it.
Letting the branch push her up, gathering all her momentum, Hazel jumped high into the air, launching herself into the open space between the trees.
Arms spread, she looked down at the small pond below. It looked so tiny.
Her jump carried her out far from the tree. She came to a stop, no longer moving out. Hazel started to fall. She twisted her body into a roll, coming to a stop and looking up at the sun. She could see the trees continuing toward the sky, reaching up and never getting there. The branch she jumped from, now far away, looked small compared to the others as it still bounced up and down. Bright blue sky filtered between the leaves. A large bird flew by.
She held her breath, hoping the bird wouldn’t see her. A Sprite would make a tasty snack for a bird that large. It disappeared. She laughed.
Hazel could feel the resistance as she fell, wind pushing against her. She was picking up speed. Hazel was falling fast.
She twisted again, arms around her knees, tight in a ball. Spreading out she saw the water of the pond coming closer. She saw the green moss surrounding the water then just the blue of the water.
Smiling, laughing, Hazel summoned her inner power. Her hands started to glow light blue. She felt energy flowing through her body. The blue glow spread out over her entire body. Sprite’s
