Long Island is a novel by acclaimed author Tóibín, set in 1976, about Eilis Lacey, an Irish woman married to Tony Fiorello. Eilis has no one to rely on in her new country, and her ties to Ireland remain strong. One day, an Irishman tells Eilis that her wife is pregnant with Tony's child, and he will deposit it on her doorstep. The novel explores longings unfulfilled and unrecognized, with the silences in Eilis's life being thunderous and dangerous. Long Island is a gorgeous story of a woman alone in a marriage and the deepest bonds she rekindles upon returning to the place and people she left behind.

Eilis Fiorello, a woman with a baby, is targeted by an Irish man who has been looking for her. She is surprised to find the man, who speaks a strong Irish accent and is the wife of the plumber who fixed everything in their house. He promises to see Eilis in August or late July. Eilis is confused about the man's intentions and wonders if he is making a threat or trying to make himself clear.
Eilis is confronted by a man she has never seen before, Larry, who insists that Naples is his real homeplace. Eilis believes Larry wants to come home and be more comfortable with his husband and son, while Rosella, who is interested in politics, believes that Larry could surprise everyone if he studied.
Living beside Tony's parents and brothers is stifling, as they can almost see in through her windows. Rosella's grandmother explains that her grace and beauty come from her mother and aunt, who passed over their generation and came to America. She is sure that Rosella will be snapped up when the time comes.
Eilis manages to avoid Tony in his work clothes in the house of this woman, but she still has an image of him standing up from fixing a pipe and finding the woman of the house looking at him gratefully. When Tony arrives, she dished out the stew and told Rosella and Larry a story about being attacked by a dog while half his body was in a cupboard looking for a leaking pipe.
Rosella rushed over to take the plate from her mother's hand, while Tony and Larry moved the table and chairs so that the floor could be cleaned. Eilis realized that Rosella and Larry must see something happening between their parents, but it was Tony on whom she was concentrating.
II
Tony's father visits his sons to check their cars, and Eilis buys a cheap car for herself. He recommends his Armenian friend Mr. Dakessian for any car problems, as he believes the best cars stop dead in the street because their owners don't check the oil and water. Eilis, who was doing the accounts for the family business, dealt with Mr. Dakessian regularly.
One day, Mr. Dakessian gave Eilis a book on Armenian history, which she found congenial and dependable. Eilis asked if Mr. Dakessian had been in Armenia when the killings happened, and he told her that he had found a book on Ireland and what happened there. He also told her about his daughter's departure, but he wouldn't advertise the job and would welcome her if she wanted to move and work with the smell of exhaust fumes and the sound of cars revving.
Eilis accepts Mr. Dakessian's offer, as she had been having difficulty getting Tony and his brothers to agree on a system of invoicing and accounting. He offers Eilis a job at the garage, and she wants to learn the ropes from Lusin before she leaves. Eilis wants to work at ten and finish at three every day, and she wants four weeks' holidays, two of them unpaid.
Mr. Dakessian suggests an increase after the first three months, and Eilis agrees to work at the garage.
III
Eilis washes the floor and prepares for the day, while Rosella suggests she see a doctor for her hand injury. Eilis goes to bed early, thinking about the situation. Tony arrives, and they discuss work and television. Eilis asks Tony if the man who came today means what he says or if it's just an idle threat. Tony responds that he means what he says and has been trying to break the news to her.
Eilis asks Tony if there have been anyone else who has been involved in the situation. He replies that there has never been. Eilis is determined not to let Tony know about the baby and that she will not answer the door or open the door if the man comes with a baby. She stays up late reading a magazine, hoping that Tony might be asleep by the time she goes to bed.
The dilemma becomes clear: if Tony believes the man is going to leave a baby on their doorstep, he must feel helpless. However, she must steel herself from sympathy for him, as it could result in her getting up in
