PART I
Resilience
Nicole Saphier, MD
Growing up, the author had a plan to become a doctor, marry her dream man, and have children. However, this didn't always go according to plan. Her parents were East Coast-born but escaped for college, where they met and fell in love. The author was always their priority, and they never felt unloved. They were a tomboy, athlete, and honor student, with strong faith and a Catholic church community.
During adolescence, competitive cheerleading and gymnastics consumed their time outside school, leading to knee surgery and a decline in competitions. This led to a downward spiral mentally, and the author's mom, a licensed clinical therapist, was aware of her struggles with depression. She asked her coach if she could participate in coaching younger kids to help her out of the slump.
The author's mom was by her side, interpreting her dreams as a manifestation of shame. At seventeen, the author began feeling tired and not having the same energy as usual. After realizing her period was late, she took a pregnancy test at the local pharmacy. When it came back positive, she convinced herself that it was a false positive. She pulled her best friend Mandy out of school and told her, and they drove straight to her mom's office.
Mandy and the author announced their pregnancy to her mom, who was shocked and comforted. The next few weeks were surreal, as the author's boyfriend and dad had different reactions to the situation. Both regret their initial reactions now, but at the time, the author was a scared seventeen-year-old and needed more support.
The reality of being a single, pregnant teenager was overwhelming, and the author's mother's love and support were crucial during this difficult time.
The author experienced a significant change in their life after becoming pregnant during their senior year of high school. They had always pursued their goals, but the unknowns and fear of pregnancy made them question their ability to achieve them. They decided to have a child and faced rejection from friends, teachers, and church members. They stopped attending church and found solace in their Teen Bible.
A small group of friends, including Michelle, who provided emotional support and comfort during this difficult time, helped the author stay positive. Michael, a gifted musician, shared his belief that they could still reach their goals, even if they took time off after high school or go to college part-time. Michael's words and visuals convinced the author that they could still be everything they wanted to
