Chapter One

Amy worked hard at the office, getting everything done for Darren and Sam, helping them along the way. Normally, she didn’t think this sort of arrangement would work out, but it was obvious with these two that it was the case. She spent lots of time working near them, embracing their presence, and ultimately feeling happy about the job she’s been given. However, she had a feeling something bad was about to happen.

Sam worked hard on the case, not really speaking as much to his stepbrother or to Amy for a long time. Often, he would be there until the wee hours of the morning, not doing anything else but the research necessary to get what he needed finished. He knew the case he had against her would only get stronger as each day passed, but he also knew that he was growing more and more stressed as well.

Amy could see it. Even though he didn’t speak to her nearly as much as she wanted, she could tell from the bags under his eyes, the tenseness of his shoulders, and everything in between, that he wasn’t doing well. She wanted to help him out, to comfort him in this time of need, but it proved almost impossible, considering the fact that he didn’t say much.

But Sam needed to fix this. He went to court about three weeks later, his papers in hand as he stood at the forefront of the prosecution.

So Sam, you’re asking for this woman to return the twenty grand that she claims you gave to her, the judge said.

Yes your honor, Sam said.

A hand pressed up, pushing him back. It was his lawyer, and the man gave him a small grin. I’ve got this, he said.

He knew that he did, but that didn’t make the situation any easier for him. Sam stood back, watching as the lawyer brought forward all of the evidence. However, the defense was just as relentless. They strove to tell the judge that everything he said was wrong, and that he did give her the money.

Can you prove the transaction where he gave it to you, the judge said, quirking his eyebrow as he looked at the defense.

That’s when Sam saw it.  they both tensed up, obvious to the judge’s words.

No your honor, the defense said.

The judge shook his head, turning to Sam and sighing.

"I’m surprised this actually didn’t get dismissed in the lower court with what I’ve just
