    Georgia Misfits - Shelly Small

    DIKEMAN

    ONE

The last forty-eight hours have been crazy and it all started with a phone call from a friend in D.C., that one of his agents is on her way in but there could be trouble. With the word trouble out there in the universe and he had just pulled over a car with a BOLO, things were definitely going to get interesting.

As he was listening to his friend tell him the name of the agent and the car she would be driving, SSA Mike Dikeman looked up and smiled.

Well Stan, looks like you were correct in trouble coming. The sheriff out of Jesup just put out a BOLO on your girl’s car and I just pulled it over.

Just one more thing…Romy is an empath. She’s not been treated well here, so she feels like she has to prove herself. I’m on my way and will be there shortly.

No, problem. I’ve got this and will take her to the office. You know I will do what I can to help until you get here. I’ll have her go over everything for me and get things moving along as needed.

Thanks, Mike. I’m just glad it was you who pulled her over.

Hanging up the phone, he looks at the car one more time, before he gets out of his vehicle.

Stan sounded worried and I don’t ever remember hearing him sound worried before. So, what mess did she find herself in and how close did we come to not knowing anything about it?

Now at the window, he can see that she is terrified, You must be Romy Griffin.

Once back in Savannah at the office, we head toward one of the information gathering rooms. He scans the room noticing a look of shock on Brooks’ face. Maybe of recognition, but who knows with that one. Giving a nod to Holmes, so he makes sure everyone is around just in case we need them.

As I fill her in on just how lucky she was, I can see the stress and toll of being an empath has done to her. Almost as if the fight has left her.

Stan says you’re an empath. Is that true?

    If I am?

In a place like Savannah, no one would care. There are far more unexplainable things at work here, than anyone can fathom. Besides, you are not the first person I’ve met who claimed to be one.

He can see that she was not expecting that response from him. Depending on how things go, a change may be needed.

So, can you show me what you have here? Looking at his laptop at what Stan had sent him.

Pulling out papers from her satchel, I just sent the major points to Stan. Here is everything that I found.

Mike was watching her closely and was amazed by her strong desire to prove herself as she presented the facts she uncovered. He noticed that when she was talking about her gift, she was a little uncertain. He guessed she is never sure on who believes it and how others will perceive her because of it.

Damn, she is a great agent. To figure out all this on her own and with no backup. Putting herself in danger once she put it all together. She has more gumption than most people have.

If you give me a moment, I believe I know a federal judge who can help us with this.

    Tonight?

Tonight. I’ll be right back, and with coffee. It’s gonna be a long night. Call me, Mike. If you need anything, hit the intercom button.

Walking out of the room, Mike saw that Stan had arrived and was waiting for him in his office. He also brought with him a few of his own men and from the looks of it, they aren’t too happy to be here.

Brooks put some coffee on and have someone order pizza. We will be here all night.

Just before he opened the door to his office, he turned around and said, Also, make sure Agent Romy gets something to eat and drink.

Opening the door, he pulled out his phone. Give me a sec, Stan. Dialing the number for the federal judge.

Hey, it’s Mike. Yes. I know it’s late but this is important. We have a Sheriff who is up to no good and all the proof we need to lock him up and throw away the key. We need the usual, search warrant for his residence and an arrest warrant if we find physical evidence. The email is being complied and will be sent to you by the time you turn on your computer. Yes, sir, a round of golf. Thank you.

Hanging up the phone, he raked his fingers through his hair as he said, How in the hell did she figure this out all on her own with just clues from her visions? Most wouldn’t have been able to connect the dots. Yet, she has solved one of the biggest cases I’ve seen in a few years, in less than a week.

Yes, she does tend to see things differently but she also needs to see it to the end. Some of the cases put her through hell and back. She will forever be changed by some of the things she sees that we don’t, Stan said as he gets up from the chair after sending the email to the judge.

So, you brought some of your men. They don’t look happy to be here. Looking out of his office window at the men gathering around the pizza that was just delivered.

No, but they will do their job. They just don’t understand how Romy does what she does. Let’s go and get everyone up to speed. Walking out the door to greet the others on his team.

Yes, a change is in order.

    TWO

Without Romy, Mike wasn’t sure if they would have ever found out what was going on in Jesup. A few days ago, Stan and most of his team went back to D.C., but Romy was still here. Stan was correct when he said, She would see things to the end.

After finding out about her mother and father, she had recused herself from any evidence findings. Instead, she has been working closely with the coroner’s office trying to figure out who these other bodies are and contacting the families.

Seeing for himself how thorough she is and how the team and her have worked together, Mike decides to put in a call to his friend.

Hey, Mike, what’s up? Everything going okay down there?

I would ask how you did that, but I’m on my office phone, chuckling coming from the receiver, I was wanting to talk to you about Romy.

She’s okay? Nothing wrong is there? Stan asks with a touch of concern in his voice.

Oh, everything is great. She’s really been a big help. Even with all that she’s been dealing with. I’m not sure if you are aware but we have a spot open on my team and I’m asking if I can talk to Romy about filling it. I think she would fit in well here and then there is the situation with her father. I don’t want to poach an agent from you team and normally I wouldn’t…

But you are. I was expecting this call. Look in your email.

Moving his mouse to wake up his screen, Mike logged in and opened his email. His jaw dropped to the floor. There waiting for him was a letter of recommendation.

How did you know? Mike was speechless.

I saw how your team was with her and not one of them…well not one after, looked at her like she was a freak. They just saw another agent who did one hell of a job.

What do you mean one of them? You know what, never mind. I don’t want to know. Thank you. Now let’s hope she wants to take the position, Mike said feeling a little hopeful.

Well, there are a few cases here that she’ll have to finish up court wise, but I’m sure you will no longer have an open position for too long. Just do me one thing…

Sure, what is it Stan? Mike sounded hesitant.

Keep an eye on her. She can get too caught up in cases. She almost needs her own bodyguard. Stan chuckles a little at the end.

That won’t be a problem. I promise. Besides, I think she’ll have six bodyguards always looking out for her. Don’t be a stranger and thanks again.

Placing the phone back, he moved the mouse so the curser was over the print and clicked on it. The recommendation letter was printing off as he looked up from the screen.

Seeing all the men at their desks working on this case or others they had prior, he decided to get a feel for what they thought of his idea. No point in asking her if not everyone was on board. They were a tight knit family and he was hoping that Romy would make a great fit.

No time like the present. Standing up from his chair, Mike walked around his desk and out into the bullpen, as they like to call the area with all their desks.

Does anyone know where Romy is? Mike
