    The Obesity Code Summary

Obesity has been a growing epidemic for over 30 years. In Canada, the prevalence of obesity tripled from 6 to 18.1 between 1985 and 2011. Despite this, the treatment of obesity has remained stagnant and ineffective.

For years, doctors have recommended a low-fat, calorie-reduced diet as the treatment of choice for obesity. Yet virtually every person who has used caloric reduction for weight loss has failed.

Dr. Jason Fung, a nephrologist specializing in kidney disease, has established the Intensive Dietary Management Clinic in Toronto, Canada. He aims to understand the underlying causes of obesity and provide a structure for evidence-based medicine to build upon.

He believes that current theories of obesity are too simplistic, often taking only one factor into account. Dr. Fung also thinks that short-term studies may not be informative in understanding the long-term disease. In his book, Dr. Fung draws on over 20 years of experience helping patients with type 2 diabetes lose weight permanently to manage their disease. He hopes to provide a better understanding of the causes of obesity.

    ●  Evidence-based medicine should focus on causal factors rather than Association studies to better understand the causes of obesity.

    1. How Obesity Became an Epidemic

    Chapter Summary

Obesity has become a global epidemic, with the prevalence of obesity tripling in Canada from 6 to 18.1 percent between 1985 and 2011. Despite this alarming trend, the conventional view of obesity as a caloric imbalance has failed to provide effective treatment options.

For over 30 years, doctors have recommended a low-fat calorie-reduced diet as the treatment of choice for obesity. However, virtually every person who has used caloric reduction for weight loss has failed, making this treatment completely ineffective.

As a nephrologist specializing in kidney disease, Dr. Jason Fung recognized that the root cause of type 2 diabetes, the most common cause of kidney disease, was obesity. Yet, the health profession was not interested in treating obesity and instead focused on finding and prescribing new drugs to treat the problems caused by obesity. This approach failed to address the underlying cause of the disease, leading to the rise of obesity as a global epidemic.

The major problem in understanding obesity is the lack of a theoretical framework for its causes. Current theories are simplistic and often take only one factor into account, such as excess calories, carbohydrates, meat consumption, or dietary fat. However, all chronic diseases are multifactorial and these factors are not mutually exclusive. They may all contribute to varying degrees, making it difficult to understand the underlying causes of obesity.

Moreover, the focus on short-term studies has hindered our understanding of obesity. Obesity is a long-term disease that takes decades to fully develop. Short-term studies may not be informative and may lead to
