Description

On this episode, Mark and Dr. Gladden are joined by Lyle Haugen, a registered nutrition health coach who has been living with Type 1 diabetes. They discuss both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes and how they affect the body. They also talk about how other responses in the body affect diabetes. They consider effective ways that people have been managing and even living well with the disease through proper diet, exercise and medication. Lyle discusses his own health regimen that has helped him reverse many of his diabetes-related conditions and get his life back, along with some success he’s had with his clients. In order to get to this point, Lyle had to defy the recommendations of his doctors, which seemed to be only focused on managing in the short term rather than getting better. It’s very important to understand your own body, and the most common tests done in doctors’ offices today won’t tell you all of the details. More comprehensive testing is needed to determine if you’re on the road to becoming diabetic and what kind of diet your body might need to prevent it. About the guest: Lyle Haugen a Type 1 diabetic and, now, a registered nutrition health coach. He was diagnosed in 1985, a week after surviving an industrial explosion at a natural gas facility. For 25+ years, he followed all the various advice given by my doctors and nutritionist. None of it allowed him to have consistent, controllable and reliable blood sugars. Inevitably, he began to get many of the conditions associated with Type 1, like eye issues, Crohn’s/colitis and diabetic gastroparesis.  As these conditions mounted, he grew frustrated and angry with the advice he was given. He decided to take control back and figure it out for himself. He trained in nutrition and health coaching, read books, tried everything he could, took meticulous notes and, finally, he figured out a system, protocol and diet that gave him his life back.    He now sleeps through the night and has great energy. He’s not afraid to travel or experience life. The freedom he’s gained by taking back his blood sugar control has been unimaginable. His associated conditions have been getting better and better, and his health is no longer sliding down a slippery slope.  With years of diabetes experience and training as an Integrative Nutrition Health Coach, he’s developed a simple yet effective system for all those who live with Type 1. The experiences of his clients and himself demonstrate that balancing those sugars will net improvements in your health, resolve many conditions and help you awaken to a new life. Haugen realized his goal of creating a website specifically for Type 1 diabetics, https://type1simplified.com/. His adult daughter Shanice helped him refine a recipe on the website for energy bars.  He currently resides in the beautiful town of Creston, British Columbia.
