    In the Middle Ages, Dutch cuisine was simple and practical, based on basic ingredients such as fish, potatoes, vegetables and bread. Frugality was a virtue, and recipes focused on making the most of available resources. An example from this era is stamppot, a hearty mashed potato with vegetables that is still enjoyed in Dutch homes today.

    The opulence of the Golden Age:
