    Zzzz Stories - Will Bridgman

    1. Ladybugs that Bring Good Luck

An old oak tree stood next to a meadow full of flowers. It was a tree with rough bark and bent branches. It had interesting leaves that were like decorations. In autumn, a fruit called an acorn appeared on it. It had been growing there for hundreds of years, and ladybugs had lived there for almost as long.

Once upon a time, there was a big branch. In winter, so much snow had fallen that the branch broke from the weight. Then, the woodpeckers had dug a hole in that place. It was this hole that became the home of the ladybugs. They were special ladybugs. They had a unique task: they flew around and listened to the wishes of others. When someone wanted something, the little ladybug nearby heard it.

Ladybugs flew to the big oak tree. There, they told the other ladybugs which wish to be fulfilled and to whom. Then they all got together and opened the magic book. They had blueprints for the molds in that book. They flew to their bee friends when they found a mold pattern matching that wish. They gave them wax in which they stored honey. They made a mold from that wax according to the blueprints from the magic book. When the mold was ready, they read the magic book recipe to make that wish come true.

When they found the recipe, they flew to the meadow and looked for flowers and other ingredients. Then, they collected the scents of flowers, brought them, and put them in a mold. They always got a few four-leaf clovers, which were a symbol of luck and the main ingredient. They brought some morning dew from the grass and mixed everything well.

When they filled the mold with the magic mixture, they took it to the stump next to the oak tree. Then, they lined up around the mold and started flapping their wings. Thus, the smell of the mixture rose from the mold high into the air and flew to the person whose wish they were fulfilling. A person inhaled that scent and felt happiness and satisfaction. Not long after that, the wish that the person wanted came true. That's how little ladybugs worked hard and made wishes come true. No wonder everyone loved to see a ladybug. In some unusual way, everyone felt happiness when they saw it. Almost everyone had had their wish come true after seeing a ladybug. Ladybugs loved to fulfill desires and were happy themselves while doing it.

One morning, it had started to rain. It was raining so hard that all the ladybugs had to hide in their secret hiding place inside the oak tree. The ladybugs weren't too worried about the rain. They needed a little rest. Suddenly, the rain started falling harder. It was raining so hard that large raindrops entered their secret hiding place through the tiny opening. They flew up and clung to the ceiling. In no time, their hiding place was full of water.

Oh no! cried one ladybug. The magic book is wet! ladybug added. Several ladybugs tried to pull the magic book out of the water but couldn't. The book got so soaked in water that it was too heavy. The ladybugs were waiting for the rain to stop. Then, they called a woodpecker to drill a hole in the floor of their home so that the water would flow out. He did it quickly, and the water soon ran out. They took the book out to dry. They started flipping through the book and couldn't believe it. Most of the book was destroyed in the flood.

What are we going to do now? said one ladybug. Others just looked and couldn't believe it. Now and then, a ladybug would come with a wish to fulfill. However, most wishes could no longer be fulfilled because the blueprint for the mold needed to fulfill the wish was destroyed. They were sad about it. Grandma Ladybug had told them to write down all the wishes they couldn't fulfill in another book. She said that one day, when they could, they would fulfill all those wishes. They would continue to fulfill the wishes for which the blueprints were not destroyed. Grandma Ladybug told them that her mom had given her that book. She also told them the book was written by an old wizard living on a mountain.

We must go to the top of the mountain to the wizard to make us a new book! said one ladybug. I would like to go! exclaimed the other. Grandma agreed that they must go to the wizard. She gathered several of them that had the biggest and strongest wings. The following day, they started the journey. They flew towards the mountain. They progressed well. They soon reached the foot of the mountain. They rested a bit and began flying upwards. Then, a strong and cold wind started blowing. He carried them around, and eventually, they fell on the grass. They tried several more times, but it would end the same each time.

We'll never fly to the top! said one of the ladybugs. If we can't fly, then we can walk! said the other ladybug. Then they started walking up the mountain. They went all day, but they could have made more progress. They were small, and their steps were short.

I don't think this is a good idea either, Grandma Ladybug sighed. They stopped to rest and decided it was best to go back. It would be dark soon; they needed to get to safety and come up with another plan.

When the other ladybugs saw them, they knew they had failed, but they were happy to be back. Grandma couldn't sleep all night. She was thinking about how to get to the top of the mountain. Then Grandma Ladybug remembered her old friend, the eagle, who had a nest on the same oak tree where ladybugs now live. The following day, she headed into the forest towards the tree where he had built a new nest. When she arrived, no one was there. The nest was empty. She worried that he had gone somewhere. Then she landed in the nest and felt that it was warm. She knew he had been here recently. That made her happy and hopeful. She decided to wait for him. She waited a long time but didn't want to give up. Suddenly, it got dark over the nest. An eagle landed on it with wide-spread wings. She hid under a thick branch from the nest. She had to be careful that the eagle did not accidentally land on her. She was tiny, and certainly, he would not notice her.

When the eagle landed, she greeted him. He was pleased to see her. Grandma Ladybug told him what happened. She asked him to take her and a couple of other ladybugs to the top of the mountain. He gladly agreed to help, and they set off immediately. First, they went to their hiding place to get the other ladybugs on their way. The ladybugs landed on his back, held each other tightly, and were able to move. The eagle flapped its wings vigorously, which were high in the air in no time. He continued to fly towards the mountain. They soon felt the cold air. It was chilly to ladybugs, so they hid under the eagle's feathers to keep them warm. The eagle flapped its wings vigorously several more times and was higher and higher. They were flying through the clouds. It looked like a thick fog. When they came out of the clouds, the sun shone. It was a little warmer. In front of them was a mountain. They saw an entrance to the cave. There lives an old wizard.

A few more flaps of the wings, and we're there! said the eagle.

The ladybugs were impatient. The eagle landed at the cave entrance. The old wizard saw them approaching. He greeted them warmly at the entrance to the cave. He said to come in quickly to warm up a bit. It was freezing on the mountain. He made them tea, and they told him what happened.

The old wizard took one blank book and started working on a new one. He had a book of designs for lucky molds but couldn't give them his own. His book had a magical cover. He placed the blank book on the table and put his magic blueprint book on top. From a small container, he sprinkled magic powder over the books. Then, he drew signs in the powder with a colorful bird feather.

Then the magic powder began to move and entered his magic book, came out, and entered the empty book. The blank book changed color. It was now a pleasant green color. He took the book that was empty before, flipped through it, and smiled pleasantly. Then he gave the book to the ladybugs. They opened the book. There were blueprints inside. He even made some new designs recently. Everyone thanked the wizard. They should have gone down. A lot of wishes have accumulated in the meantime.

Before they left, the wizard told them it would be best to smear the book's pages with wax. The wax would protect the book from water so the same trouble would not happen again. When they returned, they first visited their bee friends, who gave them wax for the book. Bees produced wax and used it to make containers where they kept honey.

Ladybugs melted the wax in the sun and thinly coated each book page. They protected the new book as the wizard instructed them. They took it to their hiding place and started making molds. They worked day and night to create molds for all the accumulated wishes. They could now continue as they had been doing before the accident.

A ladybug was in the children's park listening to wishes. There was a little girl in the park. She played there with her mom. She enjoyed the play. But a little sadness was visible on her face. The ladybug was interested in what was bothering the little girl. She came closer to hear her wish. But she didn't hear anything. Eventually, it landed on her hair to listen to what the girl was thinking. Now, she could hear and see the little girl's thoughts.

She saw that the girl wanted a friend. She slowly flew from her hair, which was beautiful and a little curly. She flew to the old oak tree, entered their hiding place, and started flipping through the book with the molds. When she found the mold for friendship, she called a few more ladybugs, and they searched for ingredients. They quickly had all the ingredients, put them in the mold, and everything was ready.

They flapped their wings, and the smell of the mold spread around. The wind carried the scent far away. Then that smell entered through the window into another girl's room, and she inhaled it. She immediately ran out of the room and told her mother she wanted to go to the park. Mom agreed, and they went to the park.

They met that little girl whose wish ladybugs were going to fulfill. The girls started playing and got to know each other. They enjoyed playing together. They met many more times in the park and slowly became best friends. The little girl who had wanted a friend was now happy. Her wish had come true. The ladybug was satisfied with her fulfilled wish and flew off to fulfill another wish.

    2. New Picture Book

Little Petra walked with her mother. Mom held her hand. They went to the town. Mom took her to the zoo. They saw a lot of animals there. She already knew the names of almost everyone in the zoo.

Mom used to read many picture books to Petra and her brother Leo. They liked to flip through those picture books with many pictures together. They enjoyed it the most when their mom read to them before bed. Then, they would choose a picture book. They would go to the room. They would sit on the bed. They would lean on the pillows. Petra would lean a little on her mother as well. Then, her mother would read them picture books and various stories. Petra enjoyed listening and, as a result, learned a lot. She knew a lot of words, much more than children her age did.

While returning from the town, already tired, they passed by a shop window. Mom stopped and looked at the window. Petra did the same. The window was full of picture books. They were of different colors, with beautiful and mysterious images. Mom decided to go in and take a look. She looked at picture books for a long time; there were also toys, but they weren't interested in them now. Mom took one picture book at a time, flipped through the pages, and examined it. Petra was already getting a little bored. Mom showed her a picture book. On it was drawn a bear stirring something in a large pot with a wooden spoon. The bear had a big smile on his face.

Shall we take this one? Mom asked Petra.

Yes! answered Petra without much thought.

Mom bought that picture book, put it in a bag, and they headed for the bus stop. There, they waited for the blue bus to arrive. Petra liked riding the blue bus. It was entertaining for her. She had to hold on tight. That bus was in a great hurry, then rushed down the road, turned, braked, stopped, opened, and closed the doors. A lot of fun stuff happened on the blue bus. Soon, they reached the station when they needed to get off. Petra pressed the button, and the light said, Stop. Mom and Petra got off the bus. Their building was right next to the station. They arrived at the apartment. Mom started cooking dinner. Dad returned from the park with her younger brother, Leo. Petra went to play with wooden blocks. This morning, she had begun building the castle with her younger brother. Now, they needed to finish it.

When the evening came, Mom, Petra, and Leo prepared to read picture books.

Shall we read a new picture book today? Mom asked. Petra nodded her head. Leo was small; he imitated his sister. They sat on the bed, leaned against the pillows, and adjusted. It was a new picture book, so they looked at the picture on the first page.

What is the name of the picture book? Petra asked.

Soup at Mr. Bear's, read Mom. Petra smiled, then adjusted slightly, moving closer to her mother. Leo was on the other side and did the same. He liked to imitate his sister. Mom opened the picture book and started reading. There was a unique forest. Many animals lived in it. They all went about their business. Some liked to sleep. Some liked to lurk. Some liked to sneak around. Some liked to sing. But they all had something in common. They all liked to eat soup.

There was a restaurant right in the middle of the forest. Everyone stopped by every day for a plate or two of delicious soup. There was a bear cooking in that restaurant. It was a unique restaurant; there was only soup in it. This did not bother anyone because there was a different soup every day. One day, they had leaf soup with specially selected leaves with a sweet and slightly sour taste. When he mixed everything, it turned out to be delicious.
