Aubrey Alan
Meet, Aubrey Alan a man we could say is somewhat athletic. He lives in Camden, Sydney, Australia. His writing started out as a running hobby. During many of his long training runs he refined his story ideas. He recounts the first time he experienced the change of colors, running up Razorback Mountain just as the sun peeked over the horizon. Everything went from drab greys to greens and blues. In the same year he penned that book and completed a 24 hour foot race.

Gwen’s Story

The Butterfly
Hi! I’m Gwen and tomorrow I’ll be eight years old. I am really looking forward to my birthday party because tomorrow, I will once again meet my dearest friend, Gerard.
You see, a year ago, the day before my seventh birthday, while I was sitting on the lawn in our backyard enjoying the warm sun, a beautiful multi-coloured butterfly landed on my knee and spoke to me ...
Hello Gwen! Don’t be afraid. My name is Gerard. I was watching you from over there in the flower garden and noticed some sadness in your face. Then as I looked closer I saw you had a delightful smile in your eyes, so I came over to ask: Why the sad face?
he said in his soft voice.
For a while I couldn’t believe my ears. A butterfly had not only landed on my knee but was talking to me! I didn’t know whether to try and say anything or just smile and look at him. He was so lovely, dressed in colours as bright as a rainbow.
Why should I try to talk to you? No one else ever hears what I say, because when I try to speak no sound comes out. It never has. I try so hard some times that tears come from my eyes, but no sound comes from my mouth,
I tried to explain. The kids call me mutey.
Gerard’s wings began to flutter and then he looked up at me and said, Not to worry little Gwen. I can hear every word you say. I can see every word in your eyes.
As I wiped the tears from my eyes I wanted to ask him so many questions, but now I really couldn’t speak as my chin was shaking. I began to cry.
I was trying to look at the beautiful butterfly but the tears were making my eyes all misty. This was the first time anyone had ever heard me speak at all. But butterflies can’t talk! Was this all just a dream? How I’ve wished someone in this world could hear me.
Just for a moment I stopped sniffling and I ask Gerard, How come you can speak and why is it you can hear me, yet no one else is able to?
All at once Gerard flew off my knee and I thought my dream was ending. He flew up onto my shoulder and whispered, This will be a secret for you, and you only. Butterflies can talk and understand all creatures in this world. But most children don’t have time to sit down and listen to us. They are too busy playing, yelling, fighting and doing those things children do. So if there happens to be a child who stops to listen, they will hear us. I’m not going too fast am I?
No,
I said. I can’t get anyone to listen to me. Oh, it’s so nice to have someone who can hear me!
Put out your hand,
Gerard
