T he vampire was very old. No other had lived as long. His strength was unmatched. He used it to keep his race under control. The humans were becoming extinct, so he kept the others in check. He had to, or their food supply would disappear. And then so would they.
The woman was a survivor. She kept her family hidden by night, but the coffee warehouse was getting crowded. She took in anyone who managed to survive amidst the thirsty monsters. She had found the warehouse by accident when she had managed to elude the hungry one chasing her. He did not enter after her and showed distaste at the odor inside. But how long would that last?
She sensed a strong presence as she searched this day. Someone was watching her, but monsters could not survive the sun.
As she entered the abandoned store, in the shadows he spoke, I’ve watched over you for a while. Your pure heart is desirable to me. Even in the midst of death around you, the light of life lives on. I could protect you and yours if you’d come be with me. You remind me of happy times long ago. I haven’t forgotten all.
Something stirred inside her, but she managed to catch herself. He was a monster even though he didn’t look like one, so she fled into the bright sunshine, where she knew he could not follow.
Days had passed from the encounter, and her son was very ill. The medicine had run out. She must go into the night to find something to bring down his fever. She knew the risks, but it did not matter. She had the weapons, and it had to be done. She kept low and to the sides of the buildings.
Her bow was ready when the two came for her. With it, she took down the first one. The second went by stake. She was so lucky that time, but she never saw the one on the roof. He jumped too close in front of her, and she turned to flee. She wouldn’t make it. She knew he was watching.
She screamed for him, I’ll come be with you! Help me!
The head of the one chasing her fell ten feet in front of her. She smiled for the first time in a while. She would be okay. They all would be now.
