Luna - Shelly Small
Prologue
As she walked down the sidewalk carrying her bundle, she remembered what caused this chain of events to happen faster than she intended. Earlier in the day she asked a friend, who knew her and the situation she was in, to pick up a few things at the farmers market. While looking at the fresh vegetables, she overheard the farmer talking to another customer.
What did those two men ask you? I’ve never seen them around town before,
asked the customer.
They said they were looking for a lady. She went missing a year ago, her family is worried about her and has been searching for her this whole time,
said the farmer.
They continued to talk more but she knew her friends time was up. She put down the corn in her hands and causally started to move away from the farmer’s stand. She didn’t want to bring any attention to herself. As soon as she felt it was safe, she ran back to the house to tell of what she had learned.
Under the blanket of darkness, she knows she has to do it now before it’s too late. With no moon out tonight, it helps her go unseen as she walks towards her destination. Her time is up but they must never find out why she left. She wished for more time. Not wanting to risk not doing anything, and they find her; she put her plan in motion before they do.
There across the street is the building. Looking down at the bundle in her arms, she steps behind a big oak tree for just a moment. Trying to memorize everything-the way she feels, her little facial features when she is sleeping or eating. Two days with her isn’t enough time but it’s all that she has.
Hearing a noise, she pulls the bundle closer to her chest, and looks around to see if she can see anyone or anything. A rabbit jumped by. Knowing she can’t put this off any longer, she heads for the building across the street. It’s nothing fancy but an old Victorian home the county owns. As she is walking up the sidewalk to the door, she hopes what she is about to do is the right thing. It’s eerily quiet, as if nature itself is morning along with her.
Walking up the steps there’s a sign above her head; a gust of wind came, and moved the sign slightly making a squeaking sound. This wasn’t loud but enough to wake up the baby. Setting everything down fast so she could calm her before anyone was the wiser to her presence. Rocking her gently as she said, It’s okay my little Angelica, my angel. Shh…go back to sleep.
Continuing to rock her for a few more minutes she hummed to calm her.
Once asleep, she places the baby in the carrying basket. Making sure she is bundled up; she reaches into her pocket and pulls out a note and gently places it on her daughter. With tears in her eyes, she couldn’t get a good last look at her daughter. This wasn’t how things were supposed to be. Blinking back the tears, she knows this was the only way to protect her.
Bending forward she places one last kiss on her baby’s forehead and whispers quietly, You will always be loved by me. I will never forget you. I hope one day you’ll be able to forgive me for what I’m about to do, but it’s for your own protection. I hope they find you a loving home with parents that will adore you as much as I already do. I love you, and am losing a piece of my heart tonight. I won’t get it back until we are together again.
Standing up, she reaches out and pushes the doorbell. She heard the noise but no sound coming from inside, so she pushes it again. A loud noise comes from inside and then she hears mumbling of people talking. Rushing down the steps and quickly across the street. She stands once more behind the big oak tree, waiting to make sure she is taken inside.
Please hurry and open the door and take her inside. She needs your protection.
The front door finally opens and two older ladies appear they looked out not seeing anything at first, so they started to shut the door, at the last moment one of them looks down and gasps in shock. She quickly opens the door back up and grabs the basket with her baby inside.
Oh my, it’s a baby. Looks like a newborn, can’t be more than a week old.
Looking up and down the street to see if she can spot anyone.
Come inside before you wake up the baby.
She goes inside carrying the baby.
Across the street, she peeks out from behind her shelter. She sees one of them looking around down both sides of the street. With the cloak of night, she turns away with a broken heart. She knew they were close because they weren’t being quiet.
Hurry go inside with her.
They are closer now. Not wanting to leave, but knowing she must go to protect her. Leaving the confines of the oak tree, she started walking away from the house, but didn’t get far when they caught up to her.
Leaving so soon?
How was your vacation?
The two men both asked questions at the same time.
We are here to take you back, kicking and screaming if necessary.
How did you find me so soon boys?
Shit if we didn’t find you soon, then it’d be our heads rolling, luckily for us your friend let it slip that you enjoy the ocean. So, we’ve been up and down the coastline and the surrounding towns ever since,
said the bigger of the two.
So, are you coming with us quietly or kicking and screaming? I’m hoping the later.
Don’t get your panties in a twist, Harold. I’m coming besides wouldn’t want to mark-up that pretty face of yours. I was just saying my goodbyes to a few friends and explain that I wouldn’t be in to help them anymore,
she said looking back and noticing the door had just shut and the lights turned off.
