The Caterpillar and the Butterfly - Laura A. Fisher

    Prologue

T he whole time she was on the bus, it was on her mind. What would be the best way? What was the best time? Was there even a perfect time for something like this? She wondered. Probably not; she concluded, but this was as good a time as ever. Any will power that she might have had before was now all gone. It had completely faded into thin air; there was no trace of it at all.

The bus came to a stop and she exited the bus through the rear door, and started the twenty minute walk from the bus stop to her house. Usually she walked home swiftly trying to avoid any kind of conflict that might be awaiting her, but today it didn’t matter.

She didn’t care; if conflict came then it just did, and if it didn’t then that was great.

She walked slowly, as if she were taking a leisurely stroll through the park. She admired all the trees and the houses; she looked at the sky, watched as the clouds formed shapes, and marveled at how amazing it was. She walked past people and studied the way they interacted with one another. Before she knew it, she was home.

No cars were in the driveway of the two story red brick house which meant that no one was home. She took her keys out of the pocket of her jacket and unlocked the front door. She stepped inside and shut the door behind her, setting her backpack down and hanging her jacket up.

She looked around the house Hello? she called out. Anyone home? There was no response. She walks into the kitchen to see the note still taped to the refrigerator. The note read:

    Went out of town

Be back in a few days

If you need anything don’t call me

I don’t want to be disturbed

    You can call Mr. Fredricks

She laughed to herself. Boy oh boy was that woman warm or what? She thought to herself. At least Mr. Fredricks was nice; He was her 83 year old widowed neighbor. He was always friendly and pleasant to be around unlike the people that she lived with.

She ate a snack, washed the dishes, and did her homework. She watched a little television, then grabbed a throw blanket from her closet, went outside and laid it down on the lawn. She lay down on the blanket and watched the clouds some more.

The sky has always fascinated me too. She heard a voice say. She turned her head to see Mr. Fredricks smiling, also looking at the clouds. Hi Mr. Fredricks, How are you doing today? she asked. I’m just fine darling, How are you? Mr. Fredricks asked. She paused for a moment; I’m okay was her reply. Where are your parents? I haven’t seen their cars since yesterday. He asked. They went out of town; they’ll be back in a few days. She replied slightly annoyed.

Mr. Fredricks frowned; they sure are out of town a lot, do you have food in the house sweetie? he asked with concern. Yeah there are a few cans of soup, some tuna salad, and a bunch of apples; so I’m good. Mr. Fredricks sighed deeply, If you decide you want something more than that please let me know okay? He told her. Okay Mr. Fredricks, thank you. She said with a smile.

After Mr. Fredricks went inside, she sat on the blanket for a while longer until the sun went down. She sat on the blanket and watched the beautiful sunset; then she went back inside of the house and took the cupcakes and soda out of her bag that she had purchased from the store after school.

She ate the cupcakes and downed the soda. She knew she wasn’t supposed to eat like that but today was a special day; things where about to get so much better. Her life was like a horror story and she had been so miserable for so long; as the days passed things just kept getting worst, but today things were going to change.

She threw away the cupcake wrapper and the empty soda bottle, and then she took a long refreshing bubble bath. The smell of vanilla and lavender filled her nostrils and relaxed her. After her bubble bath she blow dried her hair, and put on a comfortable pair of flannel pajamas.

She opened up the medicine cabinet, and looked at the names on the bottles. She had no idea what most of them were for, but she selected three pill bottles and filled up a cup with water from the faucet. She swallowed the pills, a handful at a time. When she was satisfied she went into her bedroom, sat at her desk and started writing a letter.

    To whoever finds this letter,

If you are reading this letter, then I am finally gone from this place. I put all my pain and sadness to an end. For such a long time I felt unnoticed, unaccepted and unloved; and if I was noticed it was by the people who were being cruel and heartless towards me.

I was never smart enough, I was never pretty enough, I was never talented enough, I was just never enough of anything. No one wanted me here so… now I’m not.

I give up; I can’t take the pain anymore. When you find me, I am not asleep… I overdosed… I’m dead… You all finally got your wish…

    Good-Bye

    Lindsey Anne-Marie Lewis

She put her pen down, got up and walked to the living room, and tapped her letter to the television set where she knew it couldn’t be missed. She began to feel off balance; her head and her stomach were beginning to feel odd. She made her way back to her bedroom. She turned off the light, got into the bed, got under the covers and closed her eyes.

    Chapter 1

L indsey Anne-Marie Lewis put her h ead up and her shoulders back, trying to look as confident as possible. She held her breath and walked slowly but calmly down the corridor to her locker. She had made up her mind; she wasn’t going to let them get to her today, and if they did manage to like they usually did she wouldn’t give them the pleasure of seeing just how much their taunts and bullying really got to her.

At 5 feet 5 inches tall, 100 lbs. with a caramel skinned complexion, curly black hair coming down to a little past her shoulders, and light brown eyes. They had managed to make her feel like she was the ugliest girl in the universe.

Her clothes weren’t fancy name brand like the majority of the other students in her class but they weren’t raggedy either. Why did they always have to be so mean? You’d think she’d be used to all of the mean kids and their nonstop teasing and bullying by now since it’s been happening since elementary school, and here she was in her sophomore year of high school. Unfortunately it hasn’t stopped yet and Anne Marie was quite sure it never would.

When Anne Marie got to her locker she was finally able to exhale. She set her backpack on the floor beside her and turned the dial on the combination lock, within a few quick twists it snapped open. She opened up her locker and reached inside taking out the books that she would need for the day. Just as she was about to place her books inside of her backpack it was kicked away from her.

She put her books back down and let out a long sigh; here it was barely 7:30 in the morning and it was starting. Couldn’t she just get a break for once? Oops, was that your bag Frizzy Lindsey? It was the voice of Mitchell Raymore, one of her most notorious taunters.

She ignored his comment and made no eye contact with him what so ever as she walked away from her locker to get her backpack. Just as she went to grab it, it was kicked even farther away from her. Get your stuff out of my way Frizzy Lindsey! This time it was the voice of Charlie Straten; Mitchell was cruel with words but Charlie, he was just out and out cruel both verbally and physically.

Anne Marie took a deep breath and held back the tears that wanted to fall down her cheeks so desperately. She refused to cry, she learned the hard way that crying only made matters worst. She again made no eye contact with her assailant as she crossed the hall to pick up her backpack. For a moment she thought it was going to get kicked farther away from her grasp again, but thankfully it wasn’t. She picked it up and walked back to her locker and finally placed her books in her bag.

She walked down a series of hallways until she came to the school’s cafeteria; at least the smell coming from inside was welcoming. She walked inside to see a variety of
