I Am Tamara - Olajumoke Elkanah
INTRODUCTION
As seen in the scriptures, names have been a powerful tool in directing the destiny of many. In biblical history, parents considered the circumstances surrounding the birth of a child when giving that child a name. Some parents carried out this act with careful consideration, while others, unfortunately, were not equally attentive to its effect on their newborn’s destiny.
The impact of names on a person’s life is so tremendous that some destinies were delayed because they bore negative names, and some prospered because they had life-transforming names. Several examples abound in the Bible where the names of specific individuals needed to be changed before their destinies could be realized. God, at some point, had to change the given names of a few people because a limit had been placed on their lives, which would truncate His glorious plan and purposes for them.
One vivid example of a man for whom God changed his name is Abraham, popularly known by Christians as ‘the father of faith.’ He had a divine call on his life but needed a name change. He was formerly called ‘Abram’, which means ‘exalted father’, but God changed his name to Abraham, which means ‘father of a multitude’.
Neither shall thy name anymore be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee.
-Genesis 17:5, KJV-
God didn’t stop there. He changed Sarai’s name too. Her given name was Sarai, which means ‘princely’, but God changed her name to Sarah, which means ‘queen of princes’ or ‘mother of princes’.
And God said unto Abraham, ‘As for Sarai thy wife, thou shalt not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall her name be.’
-Genesis 17:15, KJV-
God had a great destiny for Abraham and his wife, Sarah, and if He needed to change their names beforehand, it must have been crucial to fulfilling His promises in their
