    CHAPTER 1

    SUCCESS AND FAILURE

    ––––––––

On the fifth of January of two thousand and fourteen, the office of Doctor Augusto was opened by Dona Rosa, his faithful secretary. That would be his last year of work, then he would retire.

She began by organizing the doctor's entire schedule, then selected several patients for when he arrived, choosing who would attend. He later arrived at the office.

    - Good morning, old lady. Enough of playing solitaire and let's get to work?

    - Did you come back excited, did the holidays in Spain do well? How's your dad?

    - Old Manolo is very well, also in that paradisiacal place, I was also there. Now give me the pre-selected patients for me to analyze.

    - They're all here. There's these guys here, who are very pushy, they want to talk to you anyway. They're from a rock band.

    - I'm already saying that this year I'll be more defiant and less tolerant.

    - My God! He's getting worse than his father. Good thing this will be my last year.

"My father and I will go to heaven for putting up with you all these years. You can start by scheduling these patients, then I'll go through the others.

The next day, he arrived at the office and went to his office. Soon after, Rosa warned:

"Those rockers are here wanting to talk to you, they only want ten minutes so you can look at their case. What do I do?

Ask them to come in, they said ten minutes, didn't they?

    - Exactly. They're coming in.

    - Good morning, how can I help you?

"My name is Murilo; we have a rock band, and we want you to help us.

"You're in the room and on the wrong floor, the marketing agency is upstairs.

    - Good, Doctor! I'm liking it the way you do.

    - Are you analyzing me?

"We really want your help, we need to know what's going on in people's minds, so we can have an audience that is loyal to us. Only then can we begin to take off. You know very well what people's reaction is like.

    - It's hard to get into your head, let alone an audience I don't know yet.

"We want you to help us not to do wrong things, we have a lot of problems within the band. We have an extremely shy vocalist, a very talented guitarist, but he’s addicted to drugs. We both keep the band a little structured. If you help us through half the problems, we can keep the band going.

    - I'll take care of you, but the ten minutes are gone, make an appointment with my secretary.

As soon as the boys left, he lay down on the couch and began therapy.

    - Why did I accept these patients? Am I wanting to be a music producer? In a little while I'll want to join the band, I'll let my hair grow and I'll smoke weed on stage. But one thing touched me, the fact of a person with talent but getting lost in drugs. My fight against this terrible disease will continue.

Rosa called in the room and said the next patient was waiting. He got up from the couch and asked to come in.

    - Good morning, what's your name?

    - My name is Soraia.

    - Tell me a little about yourself!

"I am a singer, unfortunately I abandoned my profession after several sad events in my life.

    - Talk a little about these events.

"My marriage was wonderful, then we had a daughter and with that I had to leave the band I played in. After five years, I decided to return to singing, this time in a solo career. On one of these business trips, I left my daughter with my sister and a fatality happened, my daughter fell from the top of the slide and hit her head on the ground. Unfortunately, he did not resist.

    - Where were you when this happened?

    - I was doing a show in Fortaleza.

    - Go ahead, please.

"My life became hell, my husband at the time blamed me, and I in shock blamed my sister.

"In this case no one was to blame, but to try to ease the pain, they looked for culprits. Go on.

"After this tragedy, my husband changed radically. He treated me with contempt, always blaming me for what happened, then came the betrayals and finally, he started beating me.

    - Did you say last? Is the marriage over?

    - Yes, he hit me twice, then I reported him. We broke up and now I'm alone.

    - What about your family?

"My mother always comes to visit me; she is helping me in everything.

    And your sister?

"We haven't talked since the wake when I kicked her out. I've been drinking and smoking a lot for a year, with depression, I hardly leave the house, I only eat when my mother goes there and brings something to eat.

    - Who convinced you to come here?

    - It was Jean, my friend and bandmate.

Why did you decide to come?

    - If I continue like this I will die soon.

    - I can tell you that you have a good chance of getting out of this situation. It will all depend on you.

    - Isn't being here a good step already?

    - Yes, a big step. You will have to face a great monster; it will not be defeated with a shot. So, you will have to be persistent, and you cannot fail or retreat, otherwise the monster eats you, in the figurative sense.

    - A difficult fight?

"You're on a road, you start a long climb, everything seems easy, because you're driving, that climb goes unnoticed, until the car breaks down. When you walk a hundred meters, you start to get tired, with that come negative thoughts. So what? Will you face this long climb?

    - Yes. I'm not living anymore; I need to react before it's too late.

    - Good to hear that. I remember that after finishing this immense ascent, you will have to find the strength to take down the great monster.

    - That's how you scare me.

    - It's a test to see if you came here to come, or really want to be helped. I will have that answer in the next sitting.

    - Next week you'll see.

As soon as the patient left, he called Rosa.

    - It doesn't cover this patient's appointment.

    - Okay. Can you be nice now, Doctor?

    - Take care of your life, old lady. I won't answer for the next ten minutes, as always.

He began to analyze the case of that patient.

"The case of Soraia is very complex, it shows how we are not prepared for death, either with ourselves or with someone we have affection for.

However, in their case it was a way of pushing responsibilities onto each other, they think that blaming someone else for the fact that occurred will lessen the pain. The process is the other way around, no one is to blame for what happened, their union, one giving strength to another, would be the best way out. Why didn't I tell her that? Keeping it to myself won't do any good. It was not the right time for this, I need to know how to prioritize the information, how many doubts haunt me.

The following week, he hosted the members of the rock band.

    - Good morning, do we have new people?

    Murilo introduced his friend:

    - That's Ralf, our guitarist.

    Are you the talented guitarist?

    - Have you told them everything?

    - All and a little more. Where's the vocalist?

Alex tried to stall and said:

    - It's a little late, it must be coming. Look at him there. That's Maicon.

    - My first orientation will be with timing. You must have responsibility to the public, they arrive many hours before to ensure a good place, they go cold, hot, take rain and when the scheduled time comes, the band does not appear. After an hour, they start playing, they still find the most of these delays. Am I wrong, Maicon?

    - Sorry for the delay, it wasn't supposed to have left just in time.

    - You didn't answer my question. Isn't that what happening with bands?

    - Yes. They say that delaying a little makes the crowd more euphoric.

    - Do you believe that? If I leave you waiting in that room for an hour, will you be euphoric?

Ralf tried to defuse the situation:

    - It's different doctor. There's a show with a lot of people.

    - Even worse, here I will make one person wait, in the show, there will be hundreds of people. Punctuality is not a defect; it is an obligation. You can be sure, you will not be criticized for respecting the agreed schedule, this is the first step you should take.

    - Doctor, how do we get our friend Maicon to loosen up more on stage? - Alex said.

    - Do you sing all the songs right?

    Maicon decided to vent:

    - Yes. I just don't like it and I don't have a way to talk to the public,

    - I don't see a problem with that. It's even better, so no one has anything to talk about it. People love to find something wrong in others, unfortunately it is a setback of our society. What sells the most is bad news, when a famous artist breaks up, has a serious illness or betrayal. In the case of Maicon, the less you expose yourself, the greater the curiosity of the public, this is positive, because you will not have rejection for something you said or did. What else hinders you?

At that moment, the members were quiet.

    - If you don't have any more problems, we can end the treatment.

Ralf decided to tell his problem:

    "I'm very talented, but I'm the band's problem. I'm a cocaine user.

    - Now I like it. They're showing me the size of the monster. So, we can know what weapons to use. How much does that hinder you in your role? If you want, we can do an individual therapy.

    - I can answer without problems, it still doesn't mess me up with the band. I play my guitar normally, but then comes the worst.

    - At some point did the drug ever get in the way of the band? Anyone can respond.

    Alex said:

    - I'll say this because I like Ralf a lot, there are shows that I'm extremely worried about his way. He doesn't even look like he's there.

    Murilo agreed and said:

    - I agree. I get very tense thinking that one hour there might be some failure on stage or even with him.

    - If I'm messing up that much I'd better leave.

    - What do you think of all this? Do you agree with them?

    - Yes. So, I want to leave the band. That way I don't get in the way of anyone else.

    - It's not by leaving the band that you'll stop getting in the way of others. Your exit will be more harmful to you, increase drug use. Loneliness and idle time are ideal tools for addiction. How about hitting head-on with the drug?

    - How so?

    - Plan. Do you know how much drugs you use per day? Or per week?

    - It's hard to know.

    - Last time you used it, can you tell how much it was?

    - I think it was four careers.

    - Try using three careers next time.

Alex did not agree and asked the doctor:

    - Isn't it better to tell him not to use it?

    - Is the doctor me or you? When you are in the desert for two days without drinking water, when you see, a lake goes running to it, a person tells you to drink only one sip. Will you listen to what this person said?

    - I don't think so.

"The drug is a very powerful weapon inside the human body. Next week, we continue.

As soon as they left the room, he began with his questions.

    - Why haven't they created a medication to fight the drug in the body yet? The pharmaceutical companies would profit from this. It could reduce or end the drug trade; would the laboratories have the courage to confront this illegal trade? I will stop my analysis because I scheduled a lunch with Doctor Rosana.

He went to his friend's floor and from there they went to lunch.

    Rosana hugged him and said:

    - I thought you wouldn't go back to Brazil.

    - I thought a lot, I decided that I need to help my patients, with that I will be helped too.

"Last year was a good and different year for us. I was able to get out of the clinic and see my patients in my private practice.

    - I changed the level when I participated in those television shows. It was good because I decided to choose what kind of patient I would attend.

    - The boring patients you pushed for me. - She laughed.

"This year I'm a little worse, I can say I'm more abnormal.

    - I feel sorry for your patients. Let's have lunch here, then I have a full schedule, I'm not well off like you.

After lunch, they were returning to work when they saw a tall, strong man throwing a snack paper on the floor. Augustus couldn't stand it and called the citizen.

    - You dropped this dirty paper of food on the floor.

The man, who was called Álvaro, did not like it and retorted.

    - I was the one who threw it on the floor, why?

"Because it's ugly, it dirties the city, it clogs the culverts, you know you can't do that.

    - Who are you to say what I can and can't do?

    - I'm a citizen, but I'm educated, and I don't do this kind of ugly thing.

    - Are you wanting to get spanked?

"I am a citizen who serves God, I am of peace, sir.

    - I'm going to take this  paper shit and throw it in the trash. Am I forgiven, sir?

    - Yes. Now he is an educated and good man.

As soon as the citizen left, Rosana joked:

    - Have you who dispute religions become a man of God?

That's what came to mind, did you see the size of the man?

    - I like it. At least he must have learned.

    - I don't think so, at this point in the championship, there's no way to change.

The following week, he welcomed Soraia into his living room.

    - Good morning, how was your week?

"They were hard days, especially when I was drinking, the other day I wanted to
