The Day I Should Have Died

Remorse… regret… love… joy... peace. These are the emotions coursing through me at this moment as I sit here on the deck of my cabin, watching the sun come up through the trees of the forest surrounding me. I never thought I would be here. It doesn't feel like it's been year, not with the year I have endured. Yet, here I sit, reflecting back and thinking about how I should have died today.

As the cool morning breeze brushes against my skin I pull my Navajo blanket tighter around me and take a sip of my coffee. The birds sing as the morning light greets them; their songs make my memory drift into the start of this transformation.

It’s funny when you go to the doctor; you never imagine you would be the one called into an office versus the exam room. It’s odd how this all started with fatigue and a headache that refused to go away. She smiled at me as she sat down. Sorry to keep you waiting Halee. Thanks for coming in. I know the last few months have been terrible with all the tests, but we wanted to make sure we had all the answers we could get. She said to me tucking a piece of her blonde curly hair behind her ear. She looked at me with a concerned expression that was plastered all over her ivory face, but it was the blue eyes that told the truth, they were screaming ‘I’m sorry.’

I nodded and forced a smile to hide my fear. It’s alright. I am glad you were thorough. So, just give it to me straight, no chaser. I said trying to sound brave even though my smile was gone.

She opened up the file and nodded. Halee, I am sorry but you have stage four metastatic lymphoma. There are some treatment options but it has spread from your brain, to your lungs, liver and kidneys. We will aggressively fight this…

Somehow after she said stage my ears no longer heard her, my brain only heard the distorted sound of time stopping. I was dying. I wanted to cry, scream and
