    Chapter 1

    PRIEST

This story happened in the year 2013.

Doctor Augusto's waiting room always had few people, he was very punctual in his appointments. On the door of his living room was a sign that read: Don't believe everything the psychiatrists say, nor can they understand each other. All the patients asked Rosa, the doctor's secretary, about that phrase. She always said to ask the doctor directly.

That Tuesday morning was quiet for Augustus. Several patients have cleared their appointments. At exactly twelve o'clock and five minutes, he went out to lunch.  Returning from lunch, her secretary reported that two more patients had canceled the appointments. He entered his clinic at exactly thirteen o'clock and five minutes. Now the Doctor had fifty minutes off.

    - Since I have a vacant schedule, I'll talk to myself to see if I can understand the psychiatrists. Why do we have so many manias? I have some myself and I can't put them aside. I always must have lunch at twelve o'clock and five minutes. I can't wear a watch or any object on one arm, it must be on both. I don't go out on Wednesday night, for everything they tell me I demand a proof, otherwise I don't believe it. I think it's over. At least these manias do not disrupt my life, otherwise I would have to see a psychologist. - He laughed.

At that moment, Mrs. Rosa entered her consulting room.

    - Doctor, your afternoon patients have cleared appointments.

    - I'm not going to meet anyone else today.

"It never happened that seven patients cleared on the same day.

    - Do you know what that means?

    - I have no idea.

"I won't have money for dinner today.

    - The doctor can go without attending for months; that will not lack money.

    - You're right, my parents left me well off, I can't complain. I'll stay a little longer here, then I'll go to the Center (Spiritist Center or Kardecist).

He lay down on his huge couch and took a nice nap. After an hour he was awakened by the noise of the phone.

Dona Rosa warned him about a patient.

    - Doctor, a patient arrived who did not make an appointment, said that he needs your help very much.

    - I'm leaving, I need to go to the Center.

    - He said he's a priest, it can be a quick consultation.

    - Father? I liked this patient, ask him to come in.

She made the priest's file and asked him to come in.

    - Good afternoon, I'm Doctor Augustus. What can I help with?

    - My name is Anselm, I'm a priest, I'm in big trouble and I don't know where to start.

    - Say your problem in a few words, then we'll start expanding it.

    - I am not happy in my mission as a priest. I feel that something is missing for my happiness.

Do you want to drop your cassock and build a family?

"I want to work, get married, have children. But I'm afraid to make such a complicated decision.

    - What are your fears?

"I am afraid of hurting my parents, they are very religious, my superiors, my faithful and the whole society that will not accept my choice.

    - You're already putting up a hurdle before you even begin. How old are you?

    - I'm forty-two.

    - I'm three years older, so I can give you some advice. I'm sorry for the way I say, damn the world. At least once in a lifetime we must think about our happiness, life is too short. So, we must live it intensely.

"It's a very difficult decision to make. It's not just coming in and saying I'm dropping my mission.

    - I understand, but with this decision, you won't please many people. The important thing is your happiness. One of the things I question God is the lifespan we have. We should live on average five hundred years; life goes by very quickly. Living on average seventy-five years, we fail to realize so many dreams. I told you this to reflect on your fears.

    - Looking at it from that side, you're right, life is too short. But I will have profound consequences ahead.

"You will know how to face them, start by having a very sincere conversation with your parents, they will understand your choice, because they want your happiness.

    - They'll be disappointed in me.

    - On the contrary, they will be happy to know that you are seeking their happiness. They would be disappointed if you were a junkie or thug, yet they would always be by your side helping you. I think the hardest thing for you is the fear itself.

    - How so? I don't get it!

    - You're afraid of you. You are afraid to give up and then regret it, you are afraid to leave your comfort zone, to find this new life much more difficult.

    - You're putting me at rock bottom!

    - I'm trying to take away this great fear that's inside of you. By the time you manage to beat yourself, half the challenge has already been completed.

    - I owe an account to my great superior, God. I made a promise and now I'm wanting to break it. I don't know if I'll be forgiven.

    - Let's get into a subject I love religion. God wants everyone's happiness, including his own. No more sacrifice. Jesus sacrificed Himself for all of us, yet He could not leave the world perfect. God doesn't want to see you at work, unhappy or obligated.

    - One must sacrifice oneself for others, as Christ did.

    - Do you want to be a Christ or a family man? The two can't be.

    - I want to be happy and with a clear conscience.

    - Happiness depends only on you, God will understand your choice. Your faithful and society will speak, because some of these people are rotten beings, they take care of the lives of others, forgetting their own.

    - The doctor is very radical; don't his clients complain about this stance?

    - They should like it. I speak the truth, I talk about your fears, it usually works out. Father, our time has run out, I really want to continue serving you.

    - I liked the query, I'll leave this room better.

Can I stop by your parish to go to confession?

    - Are you serious?

    - I have many sins, Father. - He started laughing.

After that appointment, he left the office and went straight to the Kardecist Center.

Arriving there, he met his great friend Otávio, medium and director of the Center.

    - Good afternoon, my friend, am I late?

    - You're never late. Today we will have a lecture by a medical medium.

    - Just want to see, every crazy doctor has a little.

The lecture lasted forty minutes. After everyone has left, Otávio introduces Augusto to Doctor Renato.

    - Nice talk, doctor.

    - You can call me Renato; we are not in consultation.

    Octavius praised their profession:

    - Nice profession of yours.  The same specialty, a neurologist, and a psychiatrist.

Renato looked at Augustus and asked:

    - Are you a Spiritist?

    - Let's say I'm fifty percent Spiritist. The other half is in my rebuttals.

    - What do you dispute, for example?

    - The fact that a person commits suicide, spiritism says that it is one of the worst sins. I think everyone has the free referee, if she doesn't want to live anymore, it's her right, she's not hurting anyone. Another issue, you must forgive always. A person makes a misery in his family, kills his son, or his mother, and you must forgive this creature to go to heaven. I'm sorry, but I'm going to go to hell, with all due respect, gentlemen.

    - We can arrange a meeting; I would love to be able to delve into this.

    - We can leave. Less than Wednesday night. The demons are on the streets.

    Octavius laughed and said:

    - It doesn't matter, it's psychiatrist mania.

The conversation between the friends lasted another forty minutes. Augusto arrived at his apartment and decided to make just a snack. As always, he stepped out onto the balcony of the building, sat in his chair, with the three cushions, and watched the city from the fourteenth floor. The next day, he saw his patients, minus the last one, which he again canceled. He decided to leave early, went to the parish of Father Anselm. The church was empty. He loved places like that, went to the sacristy and met the priest.

    - I promised I'd come to confession, here I am.

    - I'm surprised by your presence. Welcome.

    - I want to confess, I think it will be the last time with you.

    - You must have many sins. Let's go to the confessional.

    - Father, I think I'm very some patients, I think that by clearly speaking the reality I can help them. But often, I complicate the situation even more.

    - Do you do this with the best of intentions?

    - Yes, always wanting the best for them.

    - Better to revise your methods a bit, but I don't see it as a sin.

For Augustus, that conversation was either an outburst or an informal conversation, but not a confession.

In the end, Father Anselm asked him to pray ten Our Fathers and ten Hail Mary’s.

    - I need to make one more confession.

    - Yes, you can say.

    - I will sin again and I will not pray an Our Father. I prefer a frank and friendly conversation with God. I think the result will be better.

    - You decide how best to forgive yourself. The priest laughed.

    - Thanks for understanding me.

The following week, the priest returned to the office for his second session.

    - I thought I'd never come back here.

Have I been too you, Father?

    - You said something, now I'm agreeing. He said he speaks the truth and not what the patient wants to hear.

"I've lost a lot of patients with this method, but I've been able to help a lot of people. What about you? Are you able to help yourself?

    - It's very hard to decide. When I think about telling my parents, I begin to feel a regret, leaving me weak.

    - Regret something you haven't done yet. Why don't you do it first and then repent?

    - I'm very undecided, insecure, and afraid. With all my knowledge and my attitude towards the faithful, when I think of my resignation, I become extremely fragile.

"This decision needs to be made gradually, in phases. The first phase, you are concluding, sought help with me. The second phase, is to ask your parents for help, explain your will and your desire.

"This phase is difficult; I see a huge barrier ahead.

"This barrier can be a great foundation for you in the other phases. If your parents understand and support, you'll be much stronger to follow.

"I'll take your advice; I'll talk to my parents.

    - I really hope for your happiness. Now our time is up. I hope to see you next week.

A week later, the priest showed up for another appointment.

    - I managed to get through a big challenge.

    - Did that make you stronger?

    - Yes. Strong, confident, and secure. My parents accepted my decision, they will be by my side for everything.

    - Is your fear, which was great, getting smaller?

    - Yes. I'm managing to pass this barrier without so many scares.

    - Are you ready for the other phase?

    - Which phase do you think I should go to?

    - You should ask your great friends for help. This is the time for you to see who your real friends are. They should not judge you but help you.

"I'm ready for this new challenge, I think I'll get their support.

    - Are you right about your decision? Or is there still any doubt?

    - I'm surer of my choice now.

    - Do you know when you'll be ready for your last phase?

"I'm in a hurry to start a new life, but I'm afraid to speed up that decision.

    - From the moment you decide, follow, the hardest will be the other challenge.

    - How many phases to go?

"After you drop the cassock, you'll have one challenge a day, so it's for all of us. But never give up or blame these difficulties on your decision.

"I am aware of the difficulties, I hear everyday confessions from the faithful, many sins confessed there, I consider them as difficulties that they go through in life.

    - Exactly, Father. You have seen how I have sins, life is difficult, a daily struggle to get a little tranquility. Next week we continue.

He tried to encourage the priest as much as possible, he knew that talking to his superiors would be difficult. Even the doctor was tense and anxious to know the outcome of that conversation. The following week, he saw another patient, looked at his schedule, and saw that the next patient was Father Anselm.

Mrs. Rosa entered the room and said:

    - Your next patient didn't come and didn't call unchecked.

He didn't like the news, he wanted to know what had happened to the priest. He decided to control his anxiety, went to his favorite bar. As always, he sat at table number ten. Table that was in a point of good viewing, there he could see all the people. Felipe, owner of the bar, went there to greet the doctor.

    - Good evening, Augustus, are you being well attended?

I have just arrived, my friend, but can you ask them to bring a glass of wine?

    - That's for now. Will you want the usual portion?

    - Yes, but leave it for later.

He would always spend three hours in that bar, drink his wine, eat the same portion, steak, appetizer with mustard sauce and observe people's behavior. Always alone. That night was different, the owner of the bar went to the table and asked to sit with him.

    - Can I accompany you on this wine?

    - Yes, feel free, pretend the bar is yours.

    - Good, I liked the reception. Waiter, grab my bottle of wine.

    - You're to be
