When Sh** Slips Your Mind
Forgetfulness is like that unexpected rain shower: you never see it coming until you’re soaked. First, we’ll tackle the everyday moments when your keys decide to play hide and seek or names completely disappear from your memory.
We’ll then explore the different types of forgetfulness that life throws our way. From transience to blocking, we’ll untangle the threads of human memory. We’ll also get into the science behind forgetfulness and get into the nitty-gritty of how our brains sometimes play tricks on us. We will naturally conclude that having a clear mind is crucial. At times, our memory can deceive us, and this can happen at times when we least expect it. You leave your house, and two minutes later, while you’re already in your car, you suddenly wonder if you locked the door properly. You’re telling the story of the incredible movie you saw last week, and as hard as you try, you can’t remember the name of the famous actor starring in that movie. In another scenario, you spend two minutes looking for your glasses, even though they are simply sitting on your head. Who has not already experienced at least one situation where their memory seems to want to play hide and seek with them? It’s one of the most common human experiences, and we often end up laughing about it because the situation is so ridiculous.
In other cases, forgetting can be less funny. You are about to receive a very important email and you need to log in on a new device that asks for your password. You know the code by heart, but you haven’t used it for a few months. You try a few combinations, all incorrect, and your email is blocked. Or you wake up one morning next to the person you love, and they are pouting. You don’t understand why, and you spend the day asking them for an explanation. They finally tell you that yesterday was your wedding anniversary. How could you forget something so important? Another situation that can be quite unpleasant is when your boss asks you to prepare something for Thursday morning, and for one reason or another, your brain has decided to completely erase this crucial information from your memory. So you show up at the office on Thursday without knowing that a few minutes later, you will find yourself receiving a warning in your boss’s office.
As we have seen, if sometimes our oversights can be anecdotal and a source of amusement, in other cases the consequences can be more serious. In most cases, oversights can be fixed very quickly, but in the rare cases where it can cause problems, it can be a very unpleasant experience.
