2 Corinthians 13:14
Introduction
"I will pour out My Spirit
upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions."
Joel 2:28
"In a dream, in a vision of the night when deep sleep falleth upon man in slumberings upon the bed; Then He openeth the ears of man, and
sealeth their instruction."
Job 33:15–16
In the Upper Room in Jerusalem, I stood with a group of people, waiting for our guide to come in. While waiting, I shut my eyes and saw a vision of the Last Supper. Jesus was standing on the other side of the table, and the apostles were sitting on that side and the end, much like the pictures artists have painted. As I watched, everything was static except for the third person from the outside on the left side of Jesus. That person was also sitting but moving forward and back, almost like rocking. I got the impression that the person was me. Our guide walked in, and the vision was gone. Later, while on the bus, I asked God why everything was static and only one was moving. He responded, Because the rest are in heaven with Me, and I want you to do My work.
I told God I would if He would do it through me, as I didn’t have the ability necessary to do that. He responded that the only ability I needed was availability. What a wonderful concept. If we allow Him and are available, He will do the work through us. He then told me I could no longer be passive. If I saw someone doing something wrong or going the wrong way, I had to say something. Also, I was to tell people to listen, and He showed me two people that I was to tell. It was a radical change for me since I was not very bold. I asked why He didn’t tell them and why they would believe He sent me.
It took a lot of courage and was very difficult for me. I sat at the table with the first person and worked it into our conversation. The second one was much more difficult. There were opportunities. It wasn’t until we were back in the States getting our luggage off the conveyor belt that I thought, I will be disobedient if I don’t do it now. I will never have another opportunity, so I walked over to where she was standing. I told her God had a message for her and that He said to tell her that when she prayed, she should wait for an answer. She was so happy, she hugged me and said she had been praying and wanted answers.
God can use visions or dreams or both to give us messages and guide us as He did when He called me into ministry.
God speaks to us in several ways. They are very different and distinct. He may use one means or several different ways when speaking to each of us. The most common ways God continues to communicate with us are through His Holy Word, the Bible, with an audible voice, through messengers, peace, circumstances similitude, feelings, impressions, dreams, and visions. Our focus will be on dreams and visions. You will see how God edifies, exhorts, warns, directs us, and more when we pay attention and are able to understand the essence of the dream or vision. We will look at some from the Bible and some from mine. I will give examples of how the dreams and visions He has given me have guided me and shaped my life and how God has used dreams and visions to teach, direct, and use me.
When a vision from God appears, we have no control; therefore, it must be received. Most visions are usually more literal and easy to understand; whereas some dreams may be clear and easily understood, most are more complex. Dreams can be very elusive. We will look at ways to help us remember and record them. Looking at different symbols used in the Bible will help us interpret and find the true meaning of what God is revealing to us.
God’s communication with us in dreams and visions is helpful for knowing His perfect will for us, understanding what He is revealing about the future, and much more. God has not changed: Jesus Christ the same, yesterday, and today, and for ever
(Hebrews 13:8). God still speaks to His children in dreams and visions, as we will see from the Old Testament, the New Testament, and examples from my journals. Some will be the communication of God with me, and some with people I know and interface with.
It is imperative for all of us seeking to be in God’s perfect will that we recognize and understand what God is revealing to us in our waking hours and when we are asleep.
How Dreams and Visions Have Affected My Life
Even as a child, I knew my dreams were important, especially recurring dreams. Quite often, something would happen that was in a dream. It wasn’t until I was in my twenties that I started trying to analyze them. As I got more involved, I started writing them in a journal and sought God for their meaning. It has taken many years of prayer, study, journaling, and research to recognize symbols and other means God uses to convey His message. In deciphering my dreams, I would frequently go to the Bible. Often I would get a scripture relating to the dream, confirming it was from God. Looking back through my journals, I can see how God has used the dreams and visions He gave me. He used them to change, direct, and shape my life.
The following are a few summarized examples:
I dreamt I was in church, sitting and looking at a crucifix. A man from the back spoke. He said, How do you know it’s God?
I got upset and thought, That’s blasphemy. As I looked back at the cross, Jesus moved and started to come off the cross. As I watched, He got off the cross and picked it up. He started to carry it across the front of the church. It bothered me that Jesus had to carry it alone with no help. I slid out of my seat, picked up the back end, and said, I’ll help You.
