    Chapter 1

    The Beginning

And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper [Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor, Counselor, Strengthener, Standby], to be with you forever.

    —John 14:16 (AB)

The word of the Lord came to me as a teenager in 1997, toward the end of my high school journey. In my early years, I saw a hopeless situation in my family and all around me. Things seemed not to be going well. I saw our electrical appliances getting bad and never being repaired. I saw my mother’s business going down. I saw my mother crying for help and often wishing that things could change for the better, but things got worse. There was so much confusion in the family, and everything I saw back then was contrary to the glorious vision and beautiful future I had envisioned in my mind and spirit. I knew there was more to life, I knew there is a God who does the impossible, and I knew that the God who created the universe divided the Red Sea and raised the dead could make things better. I knew that in my spirit, and I held onto the visions I saw—the visions of a glorious life.

I had seen and lived this beautiful life until things changed for the worse. I remembered while growing up, we had everything we wanted. We never lacked anything. But as I came of age, things turned bad. I started seeking answers and solutions. I started asking questions, including what happened, why these changes happened, and how things could turn around for good.

As a young, healthy teenager born and raised in a Christian home, I was taught that every life challenge has its answers in the Bible. There are no challenges in present day life that do not have a solution in the Bible. Ecclesiastes 1:8–10 says,

All things are wearisome and all words are frail, man cannot express it. The eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor is the ear filled with hearing. That which has been is that which will be [again], and that which has been done is that which will be done again. So there is nothing new under the sun. Is there anything of which it can be said, see this, it is new? It has already existed for [the vast] ages [of time reordered or unrecorded] which were before us.

This scripture expressed my hopeless situation back then. What I saw was worrisome, and words could not express it, but thanks to God, there is nothing new under the sun. Whatever that was happening in my life and family had happened somewhere before, and in the bible lies the solution.

John 7:52 says, Search [and read the scriptures] and see [for yourself]. I began to search the scriptures for the solution to my worries; I began to read the Bible. I had this Gideon (not to be sold) New Testament Bible given to me by Scripture Union group in school.

As I read it, I began to see different testimonies of how Jesus healed the sick, raised the dead, and opened the blind eye. The testimonies were overwhelming. I believed them, but none of these testimonies pointed to my situation. No one was sick in my family, and no one was deaf or lame. No one. So I found myself still asking God for help. I needed a better life; I wanted things to turn around for good. I wished things could go back to the way they were. I said, God, please help me. I am about to finish my high school, and I want to get into university immediately. But at the rate things are going downhill in the family, it will take God’s help to turn things around.

One day as I was reading my Bible, I was led to read the Old Testament, the creation story. The scripture puts it this way:

I, the Lord, probe into people’s minds. I examine people’s hearts. I deal with each person according to how he has behaved. I give them what they deserve based on what they have done. (Jeremiah 17:10 NET)

The Lord knew I needed answers, and the Holy Spirit was ever ready to illuminate my heart with the right scriptures that would give me a better understanding.

For God has unveiled them and revealed them to us through the [Holy] Spirit; for the Spirit searches all things [diligently], even [sounding and measuring] the [profound] depths of God [the divine counsels and things far beyond human understanding]. (1 Corinthians 2:10)

As I read the creation story in Genesis—including how God created the heavens and earth and the things in it and how God changed things and turned things around—I began to gain understanding and insight into how changes can happen. The creation story is a wonderful story, but reading it this time was different. It was much more than a story; it was a reality. As I read the book of Genesis, all the images and the stories were illuminated; they came to life. I could relate to each scenario.

And He who searches our heart knows what the mind of the spirit is, because the Spirit intercedes [before God] on behalf of God’s people in accordance with God’s will. (Romans 8:27)

As I read the scriptures, it was as if the Holy Spirit was interpreting the stories and relating them to my situation. It felt like a mother was reading a storybook to her child and using the pictures to explain the stories so that her child could get a better understanding. The scripture puts it like this:

The Helper whom I will send to you from the Father will come. This Helper, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, He will bear witness of me … and will teach you all things. (John 15:26)

I can testify that the Holy Spirit is really the one teaching me all things and explaining the scriptures to me.

As I read the creation stories, the first part that got my attention was Genesis 1:2–3 (ISV), which says, When the earth was as yet unformed and desolate, with the surface of the ocean depths shrouded in darkness, and while the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters, and God said let there be light, so there was light.

This scripture got my attention, and my eyes lit up; my spirit was aglow. Now I could make sense of this. Now I could relate this darkness to the current situation of confusion in my family and things no longer working the way they were intended. The best part of this scripture was the action phrase and God said let there be light, and there was light. In the midst of the darkness, God did something—God spoke. Immediately, I got the urge to speak and pray what I wanted to see happen in my family. The changes I have envisioned can be a reality. It is possible for me to see the changes manifest in reality.

I read this portion of the scripture repeatedly to enable me to relate to it and reflect on it. As I was reflecting on the scripture, I heard God say to me in my spirit, I will help you. If you abide in Me and I abide in you, then we can cause changes to happen. No one can do this unless God is
