Reverie - Dana Gricken
INTRODUCTION
Reverie is defined as a state of being pleasantly lost in one’s thoughts—a daydream. And that is exactly how I felt writing the poetry in The Heart’s Companion trilogy with Ten Years being the first and Midnight Musings as the third. When I’m writing poetry, I can safely explore my own emotions and life’s lessons and reflect on them.
I could write a million poems but I don’t think I’ll be able to begin to cover all of the human condition. Grief, heartbreak, disappointment, love, joy. You can never write too much about them. While writing Ten Years, I realized I had too many poems and decided to turn them into a trilogy. Like Ten Years, Reverie has nine chapters, complete with lessons I’ve learned through all the major events in my life.
May this daydream-inspired poetry put you on the path to hope, understanding, and love. May it touch your heart and breathe life into your soul.
Welcome to Reverie: A Poetry Collection.
Me and my beloved poetry book that I wrote all my poems in:
CHAPTER ONE:
LOVE AND INFATUATION
Childlike
I’m falling in love with you like a little kid
Giggling and bright-eyed
It feels like I’m running through a field of wildflowers
With you by my side.
Will you show me all your hiding spots?
Can we carve our names into the tree?
I love how you bring out this side of me
How innocent it is and carefree.
I’m falling in love with you in such a childlike way
So curious to know more
It feels like I’m floating above the clouds
Like I’ve never smiled this wide before.
Loving you has me wondering
What I bothered loving anyone else for.
You make me feel so young
I’ve never felt this relaxed around anyone
I’ve only ever known love that was hard
I didn’t know it could be this much fun
Let’s forget all our responsibilities
Leave everything behind and just run.
I can be myself around you
The energy is so gentle and pure
When the world is too heavy and grown-up
You are my cure.
I think everyone should love this way
So simple and true
The world can keep their mind games and manipulation
I’ll take the lightheartedness I have with you.
If you take my hand
I swear, we can fly
I’m gazing at you with wonder
Like you’re the brightest star in the sky.
I’m diving headfirst into you
So playful and unguarded
I’m going to love you without fear
Like I’ve never been broken-hearted.
There’s no danger here
How calm you are makes the doubts disappear
I’ll go anywhere with you
Go on any adventure if you asked me to.
Some may say falling in love like this
Is so immature and naïve
But I can’t help but feel that childlike awe around you
How you swell my heart with hope and make me believe.
I’m falling in love with you like a child
So let’s build pillow forts and play pretend
I trust you completely
It’s both terrifying and exhilarating and I never want it to end.
Love The Pain Out Of You
I don’t have all the answers to life’s questions
But I’ll do my best
When your tired head is heavy
To give you rest.
And when you’re hungry
I’ll provide the sustenance you’re looking for
Don’t go searching for respite anywhere
Except at my door.
I want to be the one you run to for help
When you’re lost in the storm
I want to be the arms that hold you
That keep you safe and warm.
I want to be the one you think of
When you start your day
And when the world has turned against you
I’ll be the one who stays.
Let me take on some of your burdens
Let me lighten your load as much as I can
I can’t promise I’ll be perfect
But I promise to listen and try to understand
I’ll sit with you in the silence
And hold your hand
Give you wings to fly
And catch you when you land.
I don’t know what tomorrow will bring
But I know I’ll be by your side through everything.
And when you’re lonely and blue
I’ll be like the sun shining bright for you.
Don’t sugar-coat your problems
Don’t hide your tears
Tell me all your struggles
All your worst fears
And I’ll do anything to get you through
Beg, borrow, and steal, do what I have to do
To love the pain out of you.
Drinking Tea
We don’t have to do much
Rake the leaves in the garden
Or sit on the couch and watch TV
I’m having the time of my life
And I feel truly alive
Whenever you’re next to me.
When I wake up in your arms
With your bedhead and morning breath
I think, my God, there’s nowhere else I’d rather be.
I love that simplicity
To me, it’s tranquility.
Every day is fun with you
Even if we’re just in our pajamas, drinking tea.
A Thousand Lives
I have lived a thousand lives
And I will live a thousand more
But I’ll never grow tired of loving you
Your love is what I live for.
In another thousand lives
I will still be the same
Your hand will always be the one I reach for
My lips will only speak your name.
Time and death may separate us
But I have faith I’ll be reborn again and come back to you
And you will do the same too.
I will live a thousand lives
And then a thousand more
And I will devote them all to you.
Different Sides of You
I love you when you’re happy
I love you when you’re sad
I love you when you’re indifferent
I love you when you’re mad.
I’ll love you tomorrow
And I loved you yesterday
I love you when you’re here
And I love you when you go away.
So give me your grey skies
And all
